I'm back online after a briefish absence and following. sihaya09 has good links.

I have been following the events of police tyranny on the town of Ferguson, Mo, very closely.

A very brief summary: a police officer executed an unarmed teenager, Michael Brown Jr., over the weekend. There was a night of initial looting and rioting. That has given way to peaceful protests since Monday morning. Yesterday, a man was shot for waving a gun at police, but police are saying that it was "unrelated to protests." Police have militarized, wearing riot gear, donning sniper rifles and assault weapons (and pointing those things at unarmed protesters), and have taunted the protesters with "bring it, you fucking animals." They have tear gassed peaceful crowds, including one with a state senator present (Sen Maria Chappelle-Nadal). Alderman Antonio French was arrested for getting out of his car. Protest crowds that include children are being shot at with rubber bullets, nasty injuries are being reported. Police are also attempting a media crackdown-- they have assaulted and arrested peaceful journalists, and in one case gassed them to clear the area and then disassembled their camera equipment.

White open carry assholes with your assault rifles in Chipotle and Target? This is what tyranny looks like.

Here are people on the ground worth following (by no means a complete list):

Ryan J. Reilly, arrested Huffington post reporter: https://twitter.com/ryanjreilly

Christine Conetta, tear-gassed Huffington post producer: https://twitter.com/BmoreConetta

Another good link to follow is this list https://twitter.com/kristenhare/lists/stl-journalists, which contains all of sihaya09's links plus more. I was following this intensely until my modem died last night. It's scary, and it's infuriating because the conservative assholes who always run on about tyranny and freedom and government overreach are totally silent here. People in Gaza were tweeting solidarity with the people of Ferguson, though, and offering them advice on how to deal with tear gas.

I am sorry for your loss.

I swear I stared at your comment like this O_o for over a minute before I noticed I had said "my modem died." I slept through most of our internet-free time, and was only moderately inconvenienced by having to drive to the cable company office to get a new modem.

HOLY CRAP. Do you know how tired I am right now? I swear it said your mom, not modem.

Wow, self. WOW.

(In my defense, at least two friends' mothers have passed in the past two weeks, so it's been on my brain.)

LOL! Miscommunication all around! I hope you're able to get some rest soon. :-D My mom is still very much alive. (At any rate, she'd better be or else I'm pissed off at my entire family for not calling me.)

My condolences to your friends.

for those of you in the Boston area, there's a silent vigil scheduled for tonight at 7 pm on Boston Common, at Park and Beacon streets opposite the State House.

One correction: Alderman French was arrested for getting *in* his car to avoid the tear gas; they dragged him out of it and arrested him for "disorderly conduct". Funny; they told him he'd be in jail for 24 hours on that charge, but at 7AM they released him and dropped the charges. Sounds to me like someone found out who they were holding.

I'm following this pretty closely; I've got friends living close to Ferguson.

The police also apparently lied to the FAA in order to get a no-fly zone over the area. There's reports on twitter of drones being spotted circling overhead.

Considering their history of lying about this event, that does not surprise me.

I have been watching this unfurl on the BBC News pages and i am so disgusted at the way your police have behaved over this matter.

A deplorable, ugly situation. But, ... children at protests?
