Nicky update!
2nd-Jan-2014 08:45 am
Nicodemus!
* He is building trust. <3 He started out needing to be in my arms or in my lap at all times, but he's gradually ventured out to lay on the floor in a sunbeam while I'm on the couch, and then being able to be in a completely different room. As I type this, he's curled up on my bed.

* He started humping things. >.< Earliest available appointment for his oral surgery and neutering is the 15th, so we'll just have to deal with that for now. EDIT: bumped up to the 10th, and they'll let me know if anything opens up sooner!

* The answer to "when can I meet him?" is "soon, but gradually." We'd like to introduce him to a succession of small groups of people. A huge Meet Nicky party wouldn't be fun for him yet!

* He recognizes Adam putting on his jacket as a precursor to walkies, and he's very good about asking for walkies and asking to go on the bed. Smart pup!

You should put a yellow ribbon on his leash when he goes for walkies, until he's less skittish. :) I just learned that this is a sign for others to use caution around a dog.

You really are fortunate that his house manners are so good for a street dog. Means he was likely someone's pet at some point. Hope the next couple of weeks go through smoothly.

Well, he is also marking and scarfing his food too quickly (we ordered him a slow-down bowl). Wanted to focus on the good stuff. :) He was definitely a pet at some point, but the pattern of collar wear on his neck suggested that he was tied up somewhere for a while too. Vet thinks he did a jailbreak post-neglect...

Another way to slow a pet down is to use a wide shallow bowl. My old dogs bowl was big enough that her kibble was single layer. Made gulping difficult. Also once he settles in he may naturally settle down. Best of luck.

Oh, and good news: they were able to move the surgery up to 1/10. He'll be out of the Cone of Shame and have some time to settle back in before our wave of Arisia houseguests!
