Crowdsourcing my anecdotes!
29th-Apr-2013 08:58 am
I'm taking the bus to NYC today for my in-person Jeopardy audition tomorrow. I am anxious about the trip! I am not actually anxious about the audition! I know. I'm a weird kid.

The thing is, with so many things going on in my world lately, I've been blocking out the very existence of this audition. So I'm only now filling out my questionnaire. And I am totally stuck on my anecdotes.

If you watch Jeopardy, you know what I mean. After the first commercial break, Alex talks to each of the contestants about some random thing about their life. I must provide random interesting things.

I must provide random interesting things that are appropriate for network TV. And that are expandable one-liners. The story of the time baby Elayna met Neil Gaiman is hilarious, but too long.

One of the problems with this is that I can't tell what parts of my life are interesting to people who aren't me! I have told any number of stories that I thought were perfectly normal, only to have people go "wait, WHAT?"

If I have ever made you go "wait, WHAT?" tell me now!

What I have so far:

* Award-winning SF/F poet
* BARCC volunteer
* Jumped out of perfectly good airplane for charity

What PG-13 things am I forgetting?

I CAN TOTALLY RELATE. I wish you luck -- that would be the hardest part for me, too! I dunno if yendi has mentioned my dual identity for the workplace but... yeah. I'm sorry, Yendi!

(and I don't think your stories made me go "wait, WHAT" but let's not kid ourselves, my thresholds are clearly set to Weird.)

What about the Elayna/Neil Gaiman one (you'd have to abbreviate it, but it might still work)?

Also, you met your husband on your honeymoon. Or on a Charles de Lint mailing list, depending on how you define "met."

I don't think I could abbreviate the Gaiman one enough. I could do the honeymoon one!

I've missed most of these stories and would love to hear them some time (after you've finished qualifying for Jeopardy)

Why not mention Blog-a-thons? You raised a ton of money for BARCC, and had a great crowd donate their time & money to the effort as well. Seems like a cool story. :-)

I agree. It's something that most people don't do, but it's interesting, easily explainable, and can be kept short. There can be mention of being fueled by coffee and bad puns.

I'm another vote for blog a thons. I actually think there are more people who have jumped out of planes than have written blog entries for 24 hours.

You write stories from dares on Twitter. (I don't story tell well. Ask if that was unclear.)

'If I have ever made you go "wait, WHAT?" tell me now!'

That time you got the Tori Amos seed packets BEFORE I DID.

...not that that's juicy television material.

This always makes a good story.

Bonne chance!
