Copy/pasted from Facebook: Judah wishes me to communicate that he is…

Copy/pasted from Facebook:

Judah wishes me to communicate that he is temporarily incommunicado! Unfortunately, this is because he discovered that he has diabetes. This discovery was made when he walked into his doctor's office today with a blood glucose level of 500, whereupon he was promptly sent to the ER at Mount Auburn for fear of diabetic ketoacidosis.

There's a long-story version of all of this that hopefully I'll get to write out tomorrow, but for now I'm exhausted, so short version: they haven't managed to stabilize his blood sugar to their liking, and he's still a bit more fragile than they're comfortable with, so they're moving him to the ICU, where they will do things to him all night to make his blood sugar jump around. He's incommunicado because there's a teensy potential theft problem, so the ER doctor had me take his phone and laptop and everything else of value home. (He has books.)

I'll be returning first thing tomorrow, having been given the magic words that will admit me to the ICU at any time. (We like this ER doc.) He may not have wifi, but he'll at least have his phone back then and can respond to e-mails on it. We hope to have him back home tomorrow. I'll keep people updated as best I can.

Gah! No! Send him well wishes for me. I hope things get sorted soon!

Holy shiiiiiit. Well. At least that's a diagnosis and there are things what can be done?

Love to all of you. Please give him a hug for me tomorrow.

Yeah. I mean, at least it's a well-understood and universally acknowledged illness! I was trying to console him abut that yesterday, when he had suspicions but not a diagnosis: "Like, I hated my celiac diagnosis, but then I realized that if I have to have an autoimmune disorder, at least I have the *treatable* one." At least there's a course of treatment and a clear diagnosis.

I'm getting pretty good at delicious sugar-free cooking since I have multiple diabetic friends now. I make a cheesecake with a shortbread crust that is positively indecent, and I'll give him the recipe if he wants it. And I'm working on refininf my gluten-free dairy-free sugar-free truffles. *cackles*

I hope they find the right mix to get him sorted out soon. HUGS to you all.

Please send Judah my best wishes for a speedy recovery and an easy course of treatment. Also sending strength and good wishes to you.

Wishing Judah the best for a speedy recovery and... well, diabetes is usually forever, so an easy transition, as well.

Sending all my best insulin-controling mojo towards him!

Best wishes to Judah.

Eeep. But, yes, treatable. Is good.

On a random note, Mt. Auburn's ICU must have a different group of thieves than its regular rooms, since no one ever worried about possible theft with me. Welp, anyway!

I am keeping you all in my thoughts. Scary stuff, but hopefully manageable.

All my best to you both. As others have said, diabetes is a pain in the ass, but at least it's a generally treatable one.

I'm in year 15 with type 1 diabetes, so if either of you feel the need for brain-picking, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Fuck! So glad it was caught before it led to worse things. Thinking about you guys.
