The very small ecosystem that is fiber arts in Greater Boston

I love Mind's Eye. It's bad enough we're losing Windsor Button, guys - support the few indie yarn stores we have left! I'm super-broke this week, but hey, I have a birthday coming up and would *love* Mind's Eye gift certificates.

We are about to lose Windsor Button, not because it was not well loved or well visited, but because they are losing their lease. Well, thanks to everyone flocking there, the sales at Minds Eye Yarn have plummeted in the past month to the point where the dear owner is thinking she may have to close by June if things don't turn around this coming month. We've lost a lot of good yarn stores in the last 5 years, with folks spending less and rents rising. However, I cannot stand by and watch a friend's business and a family member's job just disappear without some fighting. My word from the inside is that $20 can go a long way if enough people are giving a bit at a steady rate. So, if you're a fiber-nerd that doesn't want to resort to what's available at Michael's or AC Moore by July, you will go to Mind's Eye in and over the next week or two and show some love. Please. Pass it on- (Feel free to buy something FOR your fiber loving friend if you are not one of them.)

Is Mind's Eye Yarn hurting because a big new Michael's opened across the street?

Possibly, but as the post says, primary cause seems to be Windsor Button's clearance sale.

I've done my bit, without knowing how much trouble they're in: A sweater's worth of Cascade 220 and when I went to pick it up yesterday, an extra skein of Noro Kureyon fell into my bag. Because... well... you can never have enough sock yarn.

Also signal boosted here and on G+.

Highly unlikely. The types of yarn (*cough* quality that is, yes I'm a snob) on offer at the two stores are completely non overlapping. You just can't buy the things Lucy sells at Michael's and vice versa.

Well, and even aside from quality, there's the question of fiber content. My yarn-snobbery mostly involves knitting with wool and disdaining acrylic (in part because knitting with acrylic hurts my hands, it doesn't have that little bit of give that wool does) and Michael's has very little wool yarn.

That said, I've still never gone into Mind's Eye yet, because I have Enough Yarn For Now. (Especially since I'm not letting myself knit anything else until I finish this one particular piece.) But if it's about keeping an LYS going through a tough patch, I can stop in and pick something up!
