Question for the knitters!
12th-Sep-2012 12:06 pm
Knitting: Morticia
So I have taken the sweater-knitting class! I feel like I can maybe do this! And I have six hours of plane travel to fill!

...and a queue full of sweaters and I can't decide.

The in-class recommendation was to knit a pullover
1. bottom-up
2. in pieces
3. with lots of stockinette

Because that'll be the easiest way to work in the necessary modifications for the first time.

Additional restrictions: I have no mad money and am thus on a yarn diet! Whatever I do will have to be with yarn that I already have. I currently have yarn in sweater quantities only in worsted and DK. Also note that I have yet to attempt cables and am not confident in trying them and extensive pattern mods for the first time simultaneously.

So. Knitters. Thoughts? What are your favorite simple-but-nifty sweaters?

This is me commenting to remind myself to check back here for suggestions. I've never attempted sweater knitting before, and I want to at some point, so I'm curious to see other's suggestions as well.

I would recommend Chic Knit's Ribbed Cardigan.
Bonne Marie Burn's patterns are elegant, simple, and well constructed.

It has some ribbing, but mostly stockinette.

It's a basic sweater, but very versatile. I find myself grabbing it on a regular basis.

Ugh. I tried going through your queue, and it was hard to look through what sweaters you have listed.

That's not a reflection on you...it's just makes it harder to suggest which sweater in your queue to recommend.

Just too much stuff?

Oh no..not at all. (My own queue is large) It's just hard to parse just the sweaters...you kinda have to go through the whole list to see just the sweaters

Have you tried tagging them?

Based on your queue, I would select Ayana. Enough stockinette to hide whatever modifications need making, enough visual interest not to make you bored stiff knitting only stockinette.

When you get ready for top-down, talk to me about Leaflet. It's a very simple sweater that has a neat lace panel up the back and can be modified to suit you.

Any of the Amy Herzog ones will work, although the one I think will be best - wintery mix - is knit in one piece from the bottom up.

I don't have a lot of any one kind of yarn, but of you want spare skeins, I likely have some that could use a good home. :)
