I am backing up my computer.

I am backing up my computer because I have seen too many friends suffer catastrophic loss of their work upon sudden and utter computer failures, and because I keep automatically dismissing the Time Machine backup reminder, and I shouldn't.

So I am going to try to remember to back up my computer the first of each month, at least, and just in case you need a reminder as well: here 'tis.

Back up your computer.

That's so funny... this morning out of the blue, at 7am, I decided to do a time machine backup after months of also ignoring. Mercury is retrograde right now so these preventative reminders and measures surely won't hurt right now!

You mentioned Time Machine, so I assume you've got a Mac. I wrote an app for my wife to do out-of-band backups as needed. You tell it what to back up (this set of files, this set of folders, whatever you want) and where to back it up, and it does its thing. If you need to restore files, then it acts as a front-end for that, as well.

It isn't a replacement for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner, but it's got its uses for special-purpose, small-set backups.

It runs on Snow Leopard, I assume it runs on Lion, but I haven't tried it there. If you're interested, I can put a copy somewhere for you to pick up.

Just did last Saturday. But thanks.

I back-up my main HD to a secondary HD, which gets backed up to the home server and to a remote online storage.

But it doesn't go as fast in reverse.

I back up my computer and external HD every month, but with everything that's been going on with me lately, I completely forgot about this month's backup. So thanks for the reminder.

Tis the season for crashy computers. You post this and my laptop says, "Oh hai! Look! A mysterious blue screen of death!"

Backing up... now.

This is why I love my Time Capsule. I don't have to think about it; I don't have to remember. It just backs up my household notebooks hourly and automatically -- and they just need to be on the network. If I had a desktop, then I might just rotate external drives, but would still let it run all the time.

Backups really need to be automatic or, in general, they don't get done. Way back when, I used to back up to tape, but that was only because I was able to take an old tape drive home from work.

And in a belt and suspenders sort of way, I also back up to the net using CrashPlan. Again, automatically. Yes, it's overkill, but I am paranoid about losing stuff.

I should be after I lost stuff in the move back from Boston.

Problem is, every one of these "push a button and forget it" backup plans I have ever tried has just crashed and refused to work.
