Nerd Wars challenges

Knitting: Morticia
Typed hastily between stressing out about unrelated things:

Size Matters. "Your challenge this month is to craft something at two different scales. You must use the same pattern for both items."

...yeah I dunno.

EXTREME ULTRA MEGA BIG CHALLENGE OF DIFFICULTY. Your challenge this month is to Finish those WIPs!

But. I don't have any WIPs! No fair to those of us who actually finish projects. *sulk*

HAVE A PIECE OF PI. Your challenge this month is to somehow demonstrate the concept or some aspect of Pi in a project.

PI SHAWL PI SHAWL. Shipwreck or Vortex. Yes.

Too many options on the description of this one to copy and paste. I've queued the Eiki shawl, the proceeds from which go to Japan relief; apparently it is enough just to buy the pattern, not even knit it during April? But I'll knit it anyway if I have time.

READING RAINBOW. Your challenge this month is to create something literary or literary-adjacent.

The scarf I need to knit for Elayna is the green of House Tamra. I've asked whether I can do a thing from an as-yet-unpublished work. This is pretty much my one shot to tie that scarf into a challenge, so here's hoping they say yes!

Hydrothermal Vents and Deep Sea Communities. For this challenge create something inspired by the deep sea and abyssal zone life and geological characteristics.

We're gonna get all Peter Watts up in here. How, I don't know. I'll figure it out.

Priority list: reading rainbow, pi, Japan relief, deep sea. I leave myself open to ideas for size matters. I'm grumpy that my organization and efficiency blocks me out of a whole challenge. :P

EDIT: The "finish those WIPs" challenge has been amended to allow stashbuster projects. I am not the only person who finishes her projects!

I keep eyeing Shipwreck. And eyeing it. And then I tell myself, there are others WIPS I MUST finish first. I ...could finish them.
I have not attempted anything beaded yet.

Don't think of it as a challenge you can't do. Think of it as a challenge you have already done.

Wouldn't your current projects that you'll finish this month actually be considered a WIP? Or do they have a definition of WIP as in it much have been languishing on the needles for x number of months?

To me every project is a WIP until it's finished.
1st-Apr-2011 04:29 pm (UTC)
They define it as "things you didn't start this month". If I hadn't finished something from March, I could finish it today and have it count. But I'm all organized and shit. :P

I have 2 project that would qualify for that. One is a queen sized afghan that's going to need at least 10 more skeins of Homespun. The other is a pair of socks that are for when I'm standing in line since my current projects are too large to carry around.

That sucks though. You should get kudos for not letting things sit. I don't understand having lots of stuff not finished all the time.

Maybe I'm just a confused knitter. I think things look 10x more awesome when finished and blocked.

I am so organized that my stash is organized by weight, my patterns are in a binder, and when I know what pattern I'm going to do with what yarn? I put them together in a gallon-sized Ziploc, so there.

I give myself unofficial bonus points. *nod*

I'm not that organized but that's 99% a space issue, as in, I have none. 1 bedroom apartments suck. (But I've been promised a craft room when we buy a house.)

My next 16 patterns are picked out, I have the yarn on hand for most of them, and I know where the yarn is for the remaining 3. :D

And your bonus points are totally official. *nods*

Oh, space is part of my problem. I only have an area of my office closet for yarn storage, so I need to keep it organized!

sindrian mentioned the possibility of a craft room in the eventual dream house. I think little cartoon hearts floated around my head.

Hubby gets a game room for his books and box sets so I get a craft room. :D I'm pretty sure I swooned too.

Currently I'm overflowing a small 1 foot square of stacked space beside the bed. Maybe I need to stack higher. LOL

Oh, you have so many problems...
1st-Apr-2011 04:59 pm (UTC)
Can one thing count for two challenges? I mean, you thought up the scarf for Elayna in March, so it's sort-of technically a WIP, just mostly in your head at the moment.

Yeah, I'm a lawyer.

Don't think of it as being blocked out of a challenge. Think of yourself as being so damn good you met the challenge before anybody dreamed it up!

I heart that Shipwreck shawl although the top leafy bit is somehow not what I would picture there -- and me being me I would want it in green and grey. I cannot remotely knit to that level of difficulty, but I have an advanced knitting friend who likes a challenge as long as I buy the yarn.

Knit a scale image of several different sauropods for the size challenge?
2nd-Apr-2011 03:27 am (UTC)
For the 'scale' one, I have a vague mental image of something made in very fine yarn, like crochet-cotton fine, and then in very thick yarn. Though what, I haven't the slightest.

But. I don't have any WIPs!

Sure you do. You have yet to finish my Appa hat.
2nd-Apr-2011 05:04 pm (UTC)
This is a different challenge, though; it's meant to be our own WIPs, spring cleaning for us. :)
2nd-Apr-2011 05:06 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I was hoping I could get you in on a technicality.
