My parents are on their way back to Florida right now! That improves things!

Physically, pretty okay.

Shayara Process
Do y'all want this documented? I mean, there'll be metrics and minutia, and some may find it all unutterably dull. But some may find it illuminating.

The first thing I'm working on is My Empire for Ashes, currently a novella at 15K words. It'll almost certainly be 20K by the time I'm through, if not 25K. My editor wants a lot of the stuff that I elided in my rush to get the story out of my head so I could write other stuff expanded upon. Some of that = a lot more info in the present-day framing device, but the bulk of it is that I stripped the development of Alexander and Katrina's relationship down to the barest of bones, rendered it in as few brushstrokes as possible, but my editor wants to see it develop more in realtime. Which... takes a lot more words! Also, since this is now your intro to Shayara and not just a thing I pushed out of my head for people who are most likely already familiar, I need to weave in more about the political structure of the city, among other things.

Other than the actual writing, we're in potentially awesome cover art negotiations. The publisher has suggested a collectible or trick-taking card game, but that's not immediate - I myself am not a game designer, and so my priority is writing the books, and a game designer will have to take a look sometime around book two/three and see what kind of game makes sense for the story. Soundtrack is an active thought, as is jewelry. Scents have been suggested. No, I'm not big enough for BPAL! But maybe someone else.

But mostly my job is writing the damn things and we'll see what happens.

Quote of the Day
Via Jonathan Carroll, as usual.

"What we hunger for perhaps more than anything else is to be known in our full humanness, and yet that is often just what we also fear more than anything else. It is important to tell at least from time to time the secret of who we truly and fully are... because otherwise we run the risk of losing track of who we truly and fully are and little by little come to accept instead the highly edited version which we put forth in hope that the world will find it more acceptable than the real thing. It is important to tell our secrets too because it makes it easier... for other people to tell us a secret or two of their own... "
