From regyt and firebirdgrrl:

"Apparently, March is question month. If you'd like to ask me a question, I'll do my best to answer, either truthfully or not. I reserve the right to answer in private or a filtered post if I think that's fitting, and any lies will be bolded. Comments to this post are screened."

Since replying to comments means unscreening them, I'll reply in a separate post later today unless you say in your comment that I can unscreen.

If you could give me one piece of advice, what would it be? Especially interested re: parenting pre-teen girls because boy howdy am I struggling with that lately. If you want to unscreen that's fine because I am likely not the only parent who admires how well you seem to be doing with Elayna.

One piece of advice re: teenage girls. Hrm.

Take breaks, I think! Elayna and I are not always Lorelai and Rory. There are times when we push the HELL out of each other's buttons. At those times, the best possible thing for us is to be in separate rooms. Or separate houses. Saying "I cannot talk to you about this right now" is not a failure condition, it's a thing that allows us to cool down so we're not setting each other off with every syllable.

Bonus advice: Make sure she has non-parent grownups to talk to. When Elayna and I have difficulty, it helps that she can talk to zarhooie or gwynraven or fiddle_dragon.

I'm always worried when I ask questions like this that the person being asked has posted like a million words on the topic and I somehow missed the post, even though I do still read LJ daily and I have a pretty good memory. Of course it helps that only about 75-80 people on my friendslist still post semi-regularly.

All the same, here is my question: I know you've published stories in the Shayara-verse as a comic, webcomic, illuminated manuscript, and small vignettes posted to this and other blogs, and I know you've written about this universe for going on two decades now. Now that you have a multi-book contract for (presumably) straight-up novels, how much of your existing work are you going to have to retool for that medium in this year, and what will that process be like? I.e. what's been done as, say, a comic that has to be re-envisioned for novel format, and what's years old that needs another look?

(If it informs your answer, I have to confess that I'm not super SUPER well-versed in your fiction - I've read bits you've posted to LJ and I'm familiar with the basic concept and a few main characters...and I will most likely pick up the novels.)

(OK to unscreen, obvs - this isn't exactly a super-illuminating Dark Secrets of the Songiverse question.)

You will be happy to know that you have missed nothing! I have totally not written about that yet!

And. Oy.

Basically I'm rewriting the whole thing.

Type by type, this is what's happening:

Comic: The eight-page story of Shawn's arrival from Shooting Star Comics Anthology #6. This will live on the website - it'll be referenced in the novels, but just as conversation between Shawn and Donna. Essentially, it just gives the background that he's not from around here and that he has significant knowledge about the Sanctuary, and I can do that with minimal dialogue.

Webcomic/illuminated manuscript: The stuff that's on Shayara.com now. Parts of this will be kept pretty much intact, but the pacing for novels is so much different from the pacing for web-based storytelling. So, say, the first scene with Napalm and Johnathan totally stays, because their banter works, but the morning-after conversation among Kieran, Ryan, Halloran, and Jeramie will be radically altered because it's choppy in its current form. Also? For the most part, that stuff was written on deadline while I was also wrangling art and teaching myself how to use Drupal. It's not my best work by a long shot. I can do better, and I will.

Vignettes: Stuff here on LJ. Frankly, most of the stuff I've written here is backstory and side-story. You'll see references pop up in conversations, but it's unlikely that you'll actually see, say, Capri asking Kieran to be her first, because that happens years before the series begins - you'll be informed that she did, but we're not flashing back to that conversation, because it's cute but not directly relevant. I could tell the complete stories of everyone ever, but then each book would be 3,000 pages, so many things that you may have seen spelled out here will be more like referred to there. There'll be vignettes on the website, I'm pretty sure - it'll be a good place to stash further reading that isn't central to the plot!

So I'll be evaluating what I already have, but my feeling is that most of it will be written from scratch. I'm better now than I was when I started writing Shayara way back when, and I want to consistently do my best!
