Thor's Day
19th-Aug-2010 07:09 am
Happy birthday to my favorite monkey ever, murnkay!

Hello to new reader sabrina_il!

State of the 'Song
Better for some sleep. Yesterday was a stressmonkey day.

Volunteer Training
Is all next week, and I may write something up about what that process is like, for me and for the volunteers. But not right now.

The hotel code wasn't working, but it's back now. You should go register you room today!

What Do You Need?
My "what do you need?" post is still going strong, and catvalente has one up now too!

What I need right now is a dinner buddy, or a few dinner buddies, for Restaurant Week next week. (Also to figure out what non-blanket project to knit next.)

Link Soup
* Hello Kitty Doc Martens. Of course I must have these. So must murnkay.
* mikemarano is teaching his "Writing the Smart Page-Turner" class again this fall. Genre writers, sign up!
* Gluten-free gift baskets. I love that they have gluten-free + soy-free!
* Better Book Titles.
* Wil quits w00tstock. With bonus Paul & Storm and Adam Savage!

Daily Science
Astronomers using NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) have found the first fast X-ray pulsar to be eclipsed by its companion star. Further studies of this unique stellar system will shed light on some of the most compressed matter in the universe and test a key prediction of Einstein's relativity theory.

Work, home, and I really hope I don't require a nap, because I have *so much to do*. Packing for PiCon, org stuff for StrowlerCon, piles of miscellaneous stuff. No plans tonight save doing more of said stuff.

I had no interest in reading The Master and Margarita until I saw that. I suspect I will be disappointed, but I've downloaded a Kindle sample anyway.

Master and Margarita is actually one of my favorite books. The alternate title is pretty accurate, and it's also screamingly hilarious. Not saying you have to like it, but it is definitely worth giving a try.
19th-Aug-2010 03:10 pm (UTC) - Re: Better Book Titles
I actually really hate that the *real* English title is wrong for that book. The word "master" in Russian means "master craftsman" not "owner/lord" as it does in English, so the title should really be "The Artist and Margarita". And since The Artist spends most of the book in a looneybin and Margarita spends most of it hanging out with Satan and his awesome gang of mischief makers, and then like, Jesus makes a cameo appearance and Satan totally pwns him, let's just say I basically grew up wishing my parents had gone with their original plan and named me Margarita.

For serious though, I think the book gets lauded as a "classic" because it contains a lot allegory and cultural references and critique against the government, but all of that is completely subtextual and the forefront of the book is just a really awesome, funny, clever adventure story. I read it as a young teenager originally, and half the political subtext flew right over my head, and I enjoyed reading it a lot.

I really want to go to StrowlerCon, but it's the weekend after my tradition's big retreat, which is bloody exhausting. I'm thinking two big weekends in a row would be a really bad idea for me.

Do you think it will be something that happens in future years? Because I am hoping maybe I can go next year.

It's nice to see new discoveries still coming from RXTE. I helped build and launch it back in 95/96.

I think I stumbled on Shayara many years ago and enjoyed it immensely (and told all my friends about it) and then some stuff happened and I was away from the internet from a few years, and now that I've come across you again by accident I decided to friend to avoid losing touch :)

I've been following your LJ since Arisia, but we've never really met in person (I have met other BARCC folks through my feminist MeetUp Group, and I keep hoping they'll bring you one of these days). If you're interested in maybe making a new friend, I'd be happy to get food with you.
