Happy birthday to grntserendipity!

Happy early birthday to australian_joe and terri_osborne, who advance a year over the weekend!

Hello to new readers angel_vixen, blaze_villain cordilleran2, and lavenderfae9!

State of the 'Song
Okay, tickets said 8pm. First opening band was not actually scheduled to go on til 9:30. Dragonette came on at 11:30. I was not expecting that. It's a good thing I caught a nap yesterday, because otherwise I'd be even less functional than usual.

Inbox spinning out of control again. Must sit down when I get home and sort all of the to-dos from the "what do you need" post, and highlight stuff like jobs and places to live.

No Link Soup
Because my computer required restarting and failed to retain my wifi password, and only Adam has it, so I'm stuck on Elayna's.Hopefully Adam can get it to me by the time I get home from work?

Daily Science
Astronomers using NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope have detected gamma-rays from a nova for the first time, a finding that stunned observers and theorists alike. The discovery overturns the notion that novae explosions lack the power to emit such high-energy radiation.

Friday Memeage!
Wearing: Grey top with interesting neckline, periwinkle skirt with grey polka dots and trim.
Reading: Ares Express by Ian McDonald, Objects of Worship by Claude Lamuliere.
Writing: Oh honey. I have been out of the house and actively busy from 8am-9pm almost every day this week. Yeah, no progress there.
Knitting: Still poking my way through baby blanket, but really there's been no time. :(
Today is a verra busy workday. This afternoon is almost certainly naptime. This evening, watch my daughter in The Winter's Tale.
Saturday: Tabling for BARCC 12:30-2:30 at the Girls Summit! Stop by if you're around, especially if you are, or have, a teenage girl. Might see Scott Pilgrim after that. No evening plans yet. I'd like to go to Heroes - anyone amenable?
Sunday: ariesd's memorial. A friend's party that evening if I have the energy; I expect the memorial to tap me out a bit.

On that daily science thing, with the gammas from the nova, I see our office of public outreach is engaging in breathless pronouncements of purple prose again. Yes, they haven't been observed before, and yes there's no theoretical reason to expect a strong gamma signature from the nuclear detonation that produces a nova eruption. (By which I mean there are gammas produced, but at a much lower level than being reported here.) The thing the article didn't mention is that every high-energy astrophysicist looking at this immediately suspects this is just reverse Compton scattering of lower energy x-rays -- which converts the x-rays into gammas -- passing through the accretion disk surrounding the white dwarf. So there *is* a theoretical explanation based on well understood processes.

Well, phooey!

Saw Scott Pilgrim today; freakin' riot. Before it even started, had fun with teens in front of us because of Twilight references, and Bree of course giving the boys her opinion. Kept cracking each other up.

Feeling quite ill and have headache because I overindulged this week, especially on dairy-rich foods. Kicking myself because I had vowed to cut down on spending/eating out this week, too. The drive to Maine tomorrow will be super fun if I still feel crappy (pardon the pun).

Oh, and messed up my wrist last night. Upside is that I swam in the ocean and watched for meteors this week. So I'd call it even.

Oh, quick thing- let me know what time to pick up Elayna on the 17th. Bryan says not to worry; we'll feed her before we return her.
14th-Aug-2010 01:57 pm (UTC)
What time would be convenient to get her?

count me in as a new reader too. I really like that "What do you need?" post you put up.

Thanks! I try to do it every so often...

Fun Fact #1: My birthday of record on the 14th is the 13th in the USA due to timezones.

Fun Fact #2: My birthday of record on the 14th is not actually the date of my birth. I was born at a few minutes to midnight on Friday the 13th, and apparently the attending nurses were vaguely superstitious and unsettled by that, so my birth certificate shows the 14th. :)

Corollary of Fun Facts #1 and #2: Strictly speaking, then, it would not be amiss for someone in the USA to wish me a happy birthday on the 12th for a birthday of the 14th. :)

Most excellent and logical!

I always thought my mother was making it up, until I checked and found that actually yes, it was a Friday the 13th that year. :)
