Doctor Who: a burgeoning theme
24th-Apr-2010 08:59 pm

The Eleventh Hour: Prisoner Zero exists just out of the corner of one's eye; the only safety is in not seeing it.
The Beast Below: Willful ignorance of the existence of the starwhale and what the people of Starship UK have been doing to it.
Victory of the Daleks: Amy cannot remember the Daleks, when it's unthinkable that she wouldn't know about them.
Time of the Angels (so far, halfway in): An entire lifeform that exists only when you're not looking at it.

And no one sees the omnipresent cracks.

This season seems to be very much about things unseen.

Huh. That's an interesting way of looking at it.
25th-Apr-2010 01:15 am (UTC)
It's popping up in every episode. I am very intrigued and looking forward to seeing where they're going with this.

Well, downloading now, so I'll tell you what I think later, after banging my head against the wall with more apartment hunting.

Or not seeing, as the case may be. *rimshot*

Thank you! I'm hear all week! Tip your waiters (otherwise, they'll never fall down)!
25th-Apr-2010 01:50 am (UTC)
OMG your icon...may I steal it?
25th-Apr-2010 02:03 am (UTC)
I stole it from someone else, so sure! *laughs*
25th-Apr-2010 02:08 am (UTC)
Thankies! Ain't virtual burglary fun? nyucknyuck.
26th-Apr-2010 04:29 am (UTC)
Or, not looking at it, we shall see!

Amy saw the first crack, but doesn't seem to have spotted any of the others. Not that she could have on Starship UK, but it seems like the crack in Victory of the Daleks was placed in just the spot for the viewers to see it, but not for anyone else to see it. It's becoming the blatantly obvious gun on the shelf, not the subliminal gun on the shelf that Bad Wolf was in the Eccleston series.

Gah, did I just compliment RTD? I need a drink, then a shower. I suddenly feel dirty.

As I have said to others, it is unfair to compare it to Bad Wolf. No one knew in Series 1 that there was going to be an arc-story/arc-word. After that, they stopped being subtle, because they knew people were looking for them. Series 2 had Torchwood front and center, Series 3 had "You Are Not Alone" and Harold Saxon. Series 4 had "The Bees are Disappearing" and "The Doctor-Donna's Song".

Hmm, yes. Perception. I wonder how that will tie into the vampires.

I still say this whole crack in time thing has to do with him being the Last of the Time Lords and not doing some silly time corridor maintenance thing that only the President knows about or something.

And can I just say that I was not really that affected by the Weeping Angels last time but tonight they totally freaked me out!?! The one in the ship pulled a Ring moment! (I will never be free of that damn movie.)
26th-Apr-2010 04:31 pm (UTC)
I loved the Ring moment.

I still say the Crack has to do with Amy, and not the Doctor. (Well, it ALWAYS has to do with the Doctor in some way, but I suspect it is more Amelia Pond-centric. That's why he took her on board.)

I'm also curious what they will do with the Vampires. We know Moffat loves his fangs, and the Whoniverse has a very specific vampire mythos that they may or may not choose to respect.

Reminds me of the somebody-else's-problem field from HHGTTG, and quiet suggestion of "don't see me" nobody seems to realize they're hearing. Makes you wonder who the big bad behind it is.
Oh...when they started discussing the race that used to inhabit the planet the ship crashed on, how many seconds did it take you to connect what they were discussing with what was around them?
I had that "Oh...damn" moment out loud.

Well, the "perception filter" is clearly the "SEP field". Same principle, and has been basically described as such since it was introduced.

The moment they said "two-heads" I knew something was wrong, but didn't think it necessarily what we got. (Mostly due to the lack of wings.)

You know, I haven't given much thought about who might be the Big Bad. (I've voted on who I think "returning classic monster" is, but not Big Bad.)

I hope the BB is something new, personally. I'd even prefer if it is a natural phenomenon and not a "Threat from Beyond". (IT can be a side effect of an unnatural phenomenon, I just don't want it to be the Daleks coming through the void or the return of Yogsoggoth or some such.)

I want it to be a result of what the Time Lords tried to do at the end of last season. ^_^ They were messing seriously with the fabric of time/space; it only makes sense that they made some rips in the process. Or if you change the analogy to them pounding at the foundations, they left cracks in the walls as the repercussions. ^_^
26th-Apr-2010 05:39 pm (UTC)
Sensible, but one thing I did like about Moffat's takeover was him basically saying he was leaving the Time War. That was RTD's baby, and while it can still inform things, it isn't going to be at the root of everything.

Of course, the Dalek story has pretty much already thrown that out, so who knows?

I'd be ok with "cracks in the foundations" as long as it isn't "this is them escaping if we don't stop it".

Of course, the Dalek story has pretty much already thrown that out, so who knows?

I've only seen the first two episodes of the sesason so far, sorry. :)

And I didn't mean it was them escaping, just that them trying to escape before might have caused damage, like an earthquake shifting a foundation causes cracks in the walls. The event is over and done with - the damage leftover still has to be repaired, though.
26th-Apr-2010 06:56 pm (UTC)
Right, if they go with that - the damage leftover - I'll be fine with it.
26th-Apr-2010 11:38 am (UTC)
Yup, think you got it. And there's going to be another "crack" showing up next week...
26th-Apr-2010 05:35 pm (UTC)
As usual, Doctor Who = crack.
