* "RAGE" has been my addiction - shot in the form of intimate backstage interviews during a fashion week gone horribly wrong. In the death and destruction sense. Cast include Judi Dench, Dianne Wiest, Steve Buscemi, Eddie Izzard, and an absolutely mesmerizing Jude Law, and many more. Go watch. Free. Online or on your phone.
* Wow, the '70s were crazy, huh?
* Giant man-eating snakes breeding in Florida. Yeah, I'm glad I moved.
* Do we need an angrier Rihanna? You should read this - because it goes way beyond pop culture and delves into the narrative we construct for abuse survivors, and how we punish people who don't conform to it.
* This is my new favorite Wikipedia page.

No one is around the house today! So I am going to try to grab some writing time. And some time to outline the nonfiction book it has only recently occurred to me to write. And then I shall go yarn shopping with emilytheslayer and, time willing, coat shopping with Elayna.

Maybe the man-eating snakes will eat the right people at that hospital. (This is another one of those "can't they both lose?" situations.)

Beyond the whole legal issues with what Jackson Memorial did (and the backwardness of the state of Florida in regards to gay rights)... I can personally attest that Jackson Memorial does not train their staff or doctors in basic people skills.

When given a diagnosis of non-epileptic seizure disorder the neurologists (all four of them) just dismissed me without an explanation of what it meant or having a psychologist present. Then the youngest one came back and said I needed to learn how to manage my stress better- because my mind was causing my body to seize. 'Just learn to manage my stress better.' Now after my discharge my regular neuro had to explain that I really had a medical condition that was probably brought on by past trauma- I don't know, 11 years of child abuse- and that I needed to seek treatment, not deal with it on my own. But the hospital just treated me like I wasn't worth their time once they decided I didn't have epilepsy, and that included their social worker- everyone. In hindsight if that's the way most people with my diagnosis are treated, I'm not shocked that we don't have a great recovery rate.

(Edited to add: I can vote in Florida and do put my vote where it counts and fund the groups that need funding for gay rights issues HERE. If we had more support in my home state- the issue linked to would not have happened. Just felt that wasn't clear earlier.)

Many thanks for linking. I hope your readers know that while empathy is all well and good, it's what makes us human, we also have to *act*: make the phone call, make a donation, make time to talk to someone about the issue. Make it happen. The time is now.

Back in the late 70's my dad was offered a job with his company in Florida but my mom said no.

"Between the gators, snakes, lizards, the lack luster schooling and the anti-Castros practicing re-invasion plans in the back woods I would have no rest from worry!"

Wise mother.
