It should have been enough.

It took all my art,
this clockwork creature,
so much more precise,
so perfect, so far better
than my own flawed voice -
never a missed note,
never a breath,
just perfect, shining music
like ribbons unspooling
from that narrow golden throat.

And so beautiful -
the curls of copper,
the sapphire eyes,
ruby lips,
a queen’s ransom
arrayed sparkling for you,
O emperor.

Why was it not enough?
This gorgeous, glittering thing,
this mechanical wonder,
this miracle of gears and gems,
never wearying.
Belonging only to you.

It is exquisite.
Please let it be enough.
Please release me -
my lord, do not do this thing.
My lord, your scalpel,
and the music-box torn
from my clockwork singer’s throat -

Her precision
and my human form
can never be as one.
You will destroy us both.

It should have been enough.

Okay, The Nightingale isn't inherently creepy - but once I got to her being human and building her clockwork replacement, it got creepy. Also, I seem to have a theme of voiceless girls, which should shock no one.

We're at $120 of the $300 we need to bring gwynraven home for Thanksgiving! Please sponsor us! And remember, sponsors get to prompt us!

We'll definitely be doing this through the end of this week, at least. Tomorrow's Gwyn's turn, and we'll have a treat from Sterling, too!

The myth may not be inherently creepy, but this poem is. Creepy and beautiful.
