"I am beginning to need a cane sometimes. But I did not want to buy a cheap little folding cane at the drugstore - because I want my cane to be beautiful. I want smooth, warm wood. I want it to be made to my height. (I'm 4'11"; I don't know how tall a cane for me should be.) I want the handle to fit comfortably in my small hand. I want it pierced through, that handle, so I can attach things to it - ribbons and bells, carvings and ornaments from all of my beautiful, talented friends.
I want it to be an extension of me, not a crutch.
I imagine that only you could do it, you who make everything a ritual object..."
Because I have been tempted more and more to just give in and buy something, anything, to help me walk. Saturday was particularly arduous. But no. I will do this my way. If I need a cane, it will be lovely and mine and made with me in mind; it will be carved and decorated and will be a thing of beauty.
