As stated previously, Elayna will hopefully be going to the Woods Hole Children's School of Science this summer. 2008 dates aren't up yet, but it looks like the program ran from July 2-August 9 last year, so we can do some rough planning based on that.
Her last day of school is June 20 (if there are no snow days); that doesn't leave a lot of travel time, so she'll likely use that as just decompression time. (What? Seventh grade is rough!) But August 9 through Labor Day leaves plenty of time.
So. If Amtrak has the sale fares people think they will... Elayna and I are tentatively planning on taking a train trip around the country. :) Sample route = Washington DC (Smithsonian!) to Chicago (scathedobsidian!) to Portland (lots of you!), and then a nice meander back... Elayna's only ever left the eastern seaboard twice, both times to visit Adam's mom in Arizona. I think she'd really benefit from seeing different parts of the country. And hey, if any of you are in our path, you could show us what makes your city awesome. :)
