Hello to new reader talkingdonkey!

Medical
Still rather gimpy, but I shall persevere. Not-date and urban exploration today.

Daily Science
Researchers may have finally found a drug candidate for reducing the mental retardation caused by Down syndrome, which afflicts more than 350,000 people in the U.S. Researchers gave low doses of a human drug to mice bred to mimic the learning and memory problems in people with Down syndrome. After as little as two weeks, the impaired mice performed as well as normal ones in learning tests, and the improvement lasted for up to two months after treatment ended.
But there is a catch: the drug was taken off the market 25 years ago after being found to cause dangerous seizures in some people. And many compounds that boost learning in mice fail in human trials.

Daily BPAL
From Neil Gaiman's blog: "Just a little note to thank everyone who's bought any of the American Gods or Anansi Boys related scents from Black Phoenix Alchemy labs -- http://www.blackphoenixalchemylab.com/neverwhere.html. Beth is sending off a cheque for over $6,000 to the CBLDF.

Terry Pratchett and I have just agreed to allow BPAL to do a set of Good Omens scents, the money to be divided between freedom of speech and orang utans. Terry also thinks the Agnes Nutter scent should have gunpowder in it..."

Opium Poppy: Opium teaches only one thing, which is that aside from physical suffering, there is nothing real. A bitter, soft, fragile flower.

In bottle: Uch.

On me: Ach ptui! No words. Just ick.

Dragon's Heart: A scent pulsing with vitality, warmth and insurmountable strength: dragon's blood resin, red and black musks, a throb of fig and a sliver of black currant.

In bottle: Mmmm, darkly musky.

On me: Weird. It becomes very light. Trace of fig, trace of musk, base of dragon's blood.

Psyche: The tale of Cupid and Psyche is both a perfect love story and an allegory for the soul's search to reunite with Deity. This is the scent of true love, your heart's deepest, purest desires. Bulgar rose, Chinese white musk, lavender, orchid and frankincense.

In bottle: Lavender and frankincense.

On me: The Chinese white musk is interesting. Gets overridden some by the orchid. Aaaaand there's the rose.

Dove's Heart: A gentle, healing love blend, often used to help mend a broken heart. Brings peace of mind, soothes the sting of loss, and aids in finding closure.

In bottle: Something herbal.

On me: A light, herbal floral.

Daily Writing Prompt
We generated a lot of prompts for our Writing Marathon that we didn't get around to using! Rather than throw them away, or post them all in one shot, we decided to post one a day. I'll close my eyes and pull one out of the bowl. You write something based on it. Post it or link to it in comments. :)

Today's prompt is...

A map room.
