Me: "Do you want to do urban exploration today? Or do you want to stay in and read?"
Elayna: "I get to choose?"
Me: "Well, yah.It's your vacation."
Elayna: "I thought we were doing urban exploration."
Me: "That was the plan. But you look like you're having fun here."
Elayna, a bit weakly, clutching her book to her chest: "We can do urban exploration if you want to, though."
Me: "I'd thought *you* wanted to go, too."
Elayna: "It would be okay."
Evaluate - Child with mountains of well-loved books, saying really, we can go if you want to...
Me: "Well, I'm a little tired. So I don't mind staying in, if you'd prefer that."
Elayna: "Oh! Well, if you're tired, we should stay here and read."
Me: "That's what I was thinking. Still want to go to Diesel tonight?"
Elayna: "Oh, yes."
Me:"'k. So we'll leave to catch the bus at about 4:30. Til then, you can do whatever you want."
Elayna: "Thanks, Mommy." She smiles and dives back into her book.
What I love is that she so wants to make me happy. Fortunately, I want to make her happy, too. And this helps us arrive at good compromises, most of the time.
So now I get writing time. :)
