Coffee's effects revealed in brain scans
Coffee improves short-term memory and speeds up reaction times by acting on the brain’s prefrontal cortex, according to a new study.
Researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to determine how coffee activates different areas of the brain in 15 volunteers.
“Caffeine modulates a higher brain function through its effects on distinct areas of the brain,” explains Florian Koppelstätter, who carried out the research with colleagues at the Medical University at Innsbruck, Austria. (Read more...)

Midway: A bombardment of edible carnival indulgences. Funnel cake, caramel apple, cotton candy, salt water taffy and sugar tart.
In bottle: Sugar! Pure sugar, not unlike Mitzvah.
On me: The types of sugar split off, become differentiated. I'm mostly getting the cotton candy. Without the acrid after-tang of cotton candy. Adam's getting angel food cake off it. Meh.
Freak Show: A strange, disconcerting embrace… to some, alarming, and to some, intimately familiar: fig, pomegranate and cocoa bean with lemon, bergamot, vanilla, mellow honey musk, calamus and tonka.
In bottle: Yes, disconcerting. I'm not able to pinpoint this one.
On me: Cocoa + lemon. The fuck? Argh. No fig or pomegranate. Just the weirdass cocoa + lemon. Definitely swapping this away. Adam's not sure what the hell he smells here. I'm glad I only ordered one imp of each; these, I paid money for! *sniff* And it has died and is dead.
Athens: A reformulation and modernization of a true Classical Greek perfume, myrrhine: voluptuous myrrh, golden honey, red wine, and sweet flowers.
In bottle: Yep, sweetly floral.
On me: Yep, sweetly floral. Bit of a candy smell under that... weird, because that's not how their honey note usually expresses itself on me, but maybe "golden honey" = a different honey note than just plain honey? This is pretty. But as you can see from my obsession with Geek, Torture King, and the spice-heavy Bengal and Kathmandu, pretty = not always my thing...
*sniff* Hey! There's rose in here! Ew.
Verdict: All three go to the swap-pile. Which is a Good Thing; I need to not fall in love with any more LEs.
Speaking of which, Torture King is the #1 thing on my wishlist. If you have any and are not in love with it, please to let me know! I love Beaver Moon, too, but Drink Me is close enough to its sweet foodiness that I don't feel the need to stockpile. Nothing smells like Torture King. Need. Must have.
