Anti-Semitism

Jewish students. Attacked at Auschwitz.

Some of them descendents of Holocaust survivors.

Attacked in a gas chamber.

"He told us to go back to Israel and said that we were stupid and should be ashamed to walk around with an Israeli flag," testifies Maya Ober, a 21-year-old Polish student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan and member of the Polish Union of Jewish Students (PUSZ), which organized the 16-day summer learning program along with the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS).

After the initial altercation, a second assailant
grabbed Ober by the arm. "One of the guys held me by the arm and wouldn't let go," says Ober, who lost several members of her family at Auschwitz. "I was afraid. I couldn't move and I didn't know what he was going to do."

More fun anti-Semitism!

Areas of concern highlighted by the study, focussed on 2002-2003, include:

In Belgium "a catalogue of incidents of varying extremity ... including the firebombing of Jewish property and some serious physical assaults".

In Germany most acts were verbal rather than physical. Jewish groups reported increasing numbers of letters, emails and phone calls from 2002.

In the Netherlands anti-semitic acts increased "significantly" in particular in Amsterdam which has a relative large Jewish community.

In Britain there were violent attacks on two synagogues, two cases of suspected arson and several attacks on Jewish cemeteries.

In France there was a sixfold increase in anti-semitic incidents in 2002. "There were many incidents of Jewish people assaulted and insulted, attacks against synagogues, cemeteries and other Jewish property," it said.

There are people who believe that anti-Semitism no longer exists.

Wake up.

EDIT: But wait! There's more!

On the walls of the Rue Des Rosiers (in the Marais, the Jewish quarter), once again there are signs of the Star of David in yellow paint accompanied by the slogan, "And don't forget the showers of Zyclon," referring to the gas used in Nazi death camps.

Also in Paris, a 12-year-old girl coming out of a Jewish school was attacked by two men. They beat her, held her down and slashed her face with a box cutter. They carved a swastika into her face and walked away. Her parents have filed a police report.
