Elayna -May 2008

(no subject)

Tonight was Elayna's high school orientation, and man is she psyched. :) School trips this year? Include China and Australia. They have a cable TV studio and a radio station. AP classes out the wazoo. Adam says this is the kind, quantity, and quality of stuff he expects out of private schools. We are so lucky to live here!

Clubs Elayna's particularly excited about: GSA, drama club, writing club (run by Grub Street), Peers Making Peace, peer mediation, a capella chorus, and many more.

:)

Me, I'm on the mend. I didn't sleep well last night (air mattress deflated), which didn't help. Ran out of Celebrex, which also didn't help. So I'm ouchy and worn out. A long hot bath, a day spent resting and reading, and an afternoon nap helped. The snot goblins have moved out, so now it's just the lingering weakness and cough that are getting to me.

How are you?

How To Be a Poet
by Wendell Berry

Make a place to sit down.
Sit down. Be quiet.
You must depend upon
affection, reading, knowledge,
skill--more of each
than you have--inspiration,
work, growing older, patience,
for patience joins time
to eternity. Any readers
who like your work,
doubt their judgment.

Breathe with unconditional breath
the unconditioned air.
Shun electric wire.
Communicate slowly. Live
a three-dimensioned life;
stay away from screens.
Stay away from anything
that obscures the place it is in.
There are no unsacred places;
there are only sacred places
and desecrated places.

Accept what comes from silence.
Make the best you can of it.
Of the little words that come
out of the silence, like prayers
prayed back to the one who prays,
make a poem that does not disturb
the silence from which it came.
