Happy Friday!

Happy early birthday to yashara, who advances a year this weekend!

Hello to new readers _vicissitude_ and bellaknoti!

12 hours, 18 minutes. Whee!

Getting Things Done
dark_blade and I went out for some silliness last night. Which also resulted in getting my MedicAlert bracelet adjusted. They don't make them small enough for me. I need to order a backup, too, Just In Case.

Flogging Molly
charleseb, gwynraven, mermaidblue - what say you to Chili's for dinner? Quick + convenient for all of us (nonlocals - Charles and MermaidBlue and I all live within 1.5 miles of each other). How long will it take to get to the Roxy?

Elayna rocks.
Sifting through the papers in her courier last night, I discovered that she'd also volunteered to man a booth at tomorrow's Spring Fling! So she'll be selling marbles while I'm helping kids make bracelets.

Also, week-old news that I don't think I've reported - she got her third-semester report card. Awesome. She got 1s in almost everything (a 1 indicates mastery of said skill), and 2s only in math stuff that she's just starting, like long division (2s are +making good progress"). Most excellent.

Spring Fling
Carnival, tomorrow, I think it's 10:00-3:00. Open to the public, so anyone with kids, bring them down! Much with the fun.

Had you told me ten years ago that I'd be talking about report cards and volunteering at school carnivals ten years hence, I would have laughed in your face.

But I was a different girl then.

New violet bra! Stretchy black V-neck shirt, jeans, Hello Kitty panties, socks that say "It's All About Me". :)

I'm between books! yendi just finished Move Under Ground by nihilistic_kid - see his review in the next issue of BookSlut, where he has a monthly horror column. So. Yes. That will be the next book that I read, and I'll likely follow that up with Four and Twenty Blackbirds by cmpriest and 21st Century Wicca by anotherjen, and I can't wait for The Labyrinth by catvalente to come out....

Have I mentioned that I have some damn fine writers on my friends list?

At lunch here in the office, I'm reading magazines in a desperate attempt to stem the tide of said magazines that threatens to crush my coffee table.

I need a new coffee table.

I covered that above. :) I'm really excited about this weekend. :)

I told y'all I suck at commenting.

Anyway - happy LJ anniversary to me! In honor of same, I would like to do the same thing I did when I hit, um, I think it was 300 readers? I tried to get 300 comments on that post. Succeeded. I harbor no illusions that I can get 761 comments on one post, but let's see how many we can get. Say anything, whatever random thing is on your mind; poke your head back in in a bit and see if you want to start a conversation with someone else. Post pictures, post where you originally found my journal, post anything! Pass it around if you like....

Happy Friday. :)

Mutant Powers

Most people toss the answer to the "If you were to acquire one mutant power, what would it be?" off whimsically, automatically. Flight! Telepathy! Frickin' laser beams!

Over the course of the last few months, it's become clear what I desperately want... the ability to know The Right Thing To Say. The ability to make things all better.

Mommy & Elayna

Y'know, I hate the idea of having a metaphorical Sanctimonius Mom Hat, let alone putting it on. I'm not SuperMom, I'm far from perfect. But.

I was reading FamilyFun magazine at lunch, and there was a column on how one mom got her kids to read more. The plan was similar to the one yendi and I use - limit TV time, and allow the child to get an additional half hour of TV time for every half hour they spend reading. (And yendi and I are specific - this means real books on her age level, not comics, not kindergarten-level books!)

This mom said that she cut their TV time back to two hours a day on weekdays and four hours a day on weekends. Not FROM. TO.

Now, I started wondering if I was overly strict... because Elayna only gets half an hour on weekdays and an hour on weekends. If she's been particularly good and we're all in the mood, we may watch a family movie that we all agree on (yes to Holes, no to Cinderella II, for example) without it affecting her TV time. But that's not every weekend, it's not to be relied upon.

Four hours of TV in a day?

Now, with some shows, I can see extending TV time. Anyone remember BrainGames? They were rerunning it on HBO Family for a bit, and Elayna loved it, and I'd happily extend her time for that, because with that, she's using her brain.

But four hours of slackjawed staring at Spongebob?

That's four hours that that kid isn't using their brain.

It doesn't have to just be reading. Four hours of reading is a bit much to expect from an elementary-schooler. But creative play is also a good way to use one's noodle. A kid's engaging a lot more thought when she plays with Barbies than when she watches cartoon animals caper across a screen.

Two hours is too much in my book. Four's beyond the pale. And if that's strict, well, I'm strict, and I don't have a problem with that.

And remind me to launch into my parents-don't-know-or-care-what-their-kids-are-watching rant later.
