How Can We Help?
25th-Sep-2012 12:38 pm
One Person can Make a Difference
I'm seen two people looking for jobs in the past 24 hours. Clearly it is time for this post again!

This is a big community, and we like helping people! Do you need help? Is there something that you can do to help someone else? Post here!

Examples:
* Looking for a job
* Looking for housing
* Looking for a venue for a house concert
* Looking for advice
* Looking for new friends

Basically whatever. If you have a need, post it; for all we know, I know someone in your city who's looking to hire someone who does what you do, et cetera.

What do you need?

Not sure if any of your nexus reaches to the North Carolina area, but I'm looking for a job in the Winston-Salem area! I have a degree in Child and Family Development, but I'm looking for ANYTHING that pays, whether it be a teaching job or a retail position. Would greatly prefer full time, but also willing to look at part time opportunities.

Dammit, if you were in RDU, I could more easily help out, but if I hear of anything I'll comment here! (I live in Cary).
25th-Sep-2012 04:52 pm (UTC) - I'm a tech writer.
I graduate with a BA in December, and I would love to have a tech writing job lined up before then.

Here's my professional website.

Skills include DITA, single-sourcing, and a number of authoring/editing software programs like FrameMaker.

I'm looking most especially on the northeast and northwest coasts: Boston, Seattle, Portland, New York, even Baltimore or northern California.

Contact me by replying, or use the contact form on my website. Thanks in advance!

25th-Sep-2012 05:04 pm (UTC) - anthropology, museum studies, MN, WI
I graduated with a BA in anthropology and a minor in museum studies this May. I would like to find a job in a museum/an internship at a museum/ some way of gaining experience. I'd prefer said position to be located in the Twin Cities or Madison, WI areas but if it is a super cool job elsewhere, I'd love to hear about that too.

I'd also love to hear about any other interesting entry level positions relating to anthropology, but museums are my priority.

I'm also always up for friends in the Twin Cities area especially those who like queer and/or nerdy things. Or ballroom dancing. Or would like to start learning a martial art (especially if they have transportation.)

IF I do move to Madison, which is something I'd like to do eventually, I'd need housing/roommates. Ideas along those lines would be good too.

whafford has an interesting project going on now. It's not really directly in your field, but could lead to contacts. Check out his LJ.

I'm looking for a pharmacist or clinical research coordinator or pharmacovigilance position in the Durham-Chapel Hill, NC area. I've applied for 15 jobs in the last 10 days and been denied for them all.

ETA: work from home/remote positions OK, too.

I'm gathering advice and information about divorce in Illinois. If anyone's been through a divorce and is willing to talk about their experiences, especially on issues like pet custody and underwater mortgages, I am very eager to hear it. Please contact me at off-coloratura at livejournal.com.

PM me? I've been there.
25th-Sep-2012 05:38 pm (UTC) - Looking for a Roommate again
Queer/poly friendly person to take second bedroom in a 2 bedroom apartment 2 blocks from Tufts main campus. Medford/Somerville line-Bus service at the bottom of the street, about 10 min to Davis Square. Room is about 11x12 with a large walk-in closet. Laundry and some storage space in basement. Room is available pretty much now. Good size and well stocked kitchen. Looking for someone to stay through at least August 2013 or possibly takeover of the apartment when I leave--(depending on landlord's approval) $650/month plus utilities--Landlord doesn't allow pets.

ETA: I would like to decorate to for the Fall/Winter $Holidays, so if that interests you please let me know.
25th-Sep-2012 05:48 pm (UTC) - Re: Looking for a Roommate again
I'm just about to comment looking for housing or roommate, and that sounds awesome except for the no pets--I have a cat.

I'm looking for a fiction publicist. Preferably one comfortable with science fiction and fantasies of manners. My fantasy of manners Kickstarter blew my goal completely out of the water, so I think I should probably run with it. :)

25th-Sep-2012 05:56 pm (UTC) - Housing or roommate
I'm moving to the Boston area at the beginning of November, and I need to find a place to live a roommate or two! A shared housing situation with compatible roommate(s) would be excellent.

About me: I'm geeky, reasonably friendly though sometimes go through introverted phases, poly, queer-friendly, Pagan, and probably going to get involved with the morris dance community again. I have a ton of books. I have a cat, who doesn't get along well with other cats so I need him to be an only cat. I have tendencies toward clutter, but I tend to be pretty good about picking up after myself in shared space.

EDITED 9/28: I almost-definitely have an apartment now, and I'll be looking for one or two roommates starting the beginning of November! If you're looking for a room, send me a message and tell me about yourself. The apartment is in Somerville near Teele Square, and it's a two or three bedroom (it's up to us!) on the first floor of a building near a supermarket and buses. It's the kind of apartment that has wood floors, not the kind that has beige carpets. (There are only two kinds, right?) Rent will be $945/month if we split it two ways, or $630 if three ways.

I have been working, unsatisfactorily, on my thesis for over a year, and have gone through a number of false starts.

If there is anyone who would be willing to give some advice on how to get a thesis of the ground and going in the direction I want, I would greatly appreciate you time and make you cookies.
25th-Sep-2012 11:24 pm (UTC)
You should poke at my husband Andy (and by extension, me) as we successfully got him through his Hampshire thesis after he was kicked out of college after his first year (before I met him)... It was a long road to figure things out and graduate.

If you don't have his email, let me know. He says he'd be happy to try & help.

We have hired people I've found on LJ before and it didn't work out so well, but what the hell, I'm willing to give it another shot.

My company (a smallish educational publisher in NYC) will soon be hiring an assistant project manager. You should have experience with some of the following: Excel, Word, FileMaker-esque databases, content management systems, Photoshop, XML, HTML, writing/editing (though we have been doing WAY less of that in recent months). Current and recent employees have come from a variety of backgrounds including production, editorial, library, and tech. I don't think we're hiring recent-recent grads - 2-3 years of experience, most likely.

Meh salary, adequate benefits, but nice people and interesting work (and always plenty to do!!).

Sound interesting? Get in touch with me. I figure when we post the job online next week, you can get the specifics and if you think it's up your street, you can give me your resume and I'll give it directly to my boss instead of you having to stand out among the sea of resumes. It's out of my hands from there, but I'll be happy to do my part.

I'm in Nashville and I'm looking for a job doing OH MY GOD ALMOST ANYTHING ELSE. Well not really--I'd really like something that involved writing and researching and/or social media promotion. And incuded insurance

I have about seven years of customer service experiece in the health insurance industry, but I'm trying to get away from both of those things. Just as importantly, I have three years and counting of experience writing for a pop culture weblog. In the course of that, I've also brainstormed story and issue ideas, recruited writers, and promoted our blog on social media. That's unpaid. Also unpaid is my work for a local non profit, for whom I've written press releases and built a Twitter following of over 100. I've also promoted this organization's evens on meetup.com, and written a piece for a major website that got into a print anthology.

I'm getting desperate everybody, I'm so sick of my job. Today someone told me that the wished I was in as much pain as they were. Seriously, don't do that shit. A resume consultant who knew what they were doing and wouldn't charge an arm and a leg would also be appreciated.

25th-Sep-2012 07:33 pm (UTC) - Also...
This is going to sound strange but I'm looking for new friends in the Nashville area specifically for prospective dating. So if you know a sweet, geeky, feminist-identified, pagan-friendly guy in the area who is avaialble for primary partnership, please feel free to make an introduction.

26th-Sep-2012 06:52 pm (UTC) - Re: Also...
I know a ton of people in the Nashville area, so I'll put feelers out for both the job and the dating!! (I went to Vandy for undergrad, and still have friends who live there--both college and non, as I lived there for a couple years afterward) and I go back periodically...I'll be in the area next weekend, actually!)

I need a professional headshot! I don't anticipate much travel in the next few months, so Boston-local preferred. I would love to barter for this, but can pay (if not a whole lot).

The company I work for is rapidly growing software/security company in the California bay area. We are actively hiring perl programmers as part of our growth. Secondary skillsets that are desired but not required would be web security, python, objective c, or C#.

If you are interested in more details, please send me a private message.

I need employment (full or part time)!

Stuff I can do:

* Freelance editing (fiction or non-fiction, any length work from flash fiction through novels, or non-fiction publications of any length). You can be anywhere -- the internet is great for this!

* Standardized test prep (I worked for Kaplan teaching SAT, GRE, GMAT and LSAT) -- people in the Boston area preferred. I'm not quite sure how to do this remotely.

* Law! I am a lawyer and am looking for public interest-related law work, preferably in the fields of youth, families, mediation, diversion, restorative justice, etc. -- but open to any public-interest law position. I especially love analyzing Big Issues and writing thoughtful, complex reports on them. If you know a non-profit in the Boston area that needs such a person, please let me know!

I can send my resume upon request.

Thanks!

How far are you willing to travel? I have a small, lovely critique group that meets in Durham (Tuesday mornings, 10-noon). If you're interested, I can ask the other ladies.

I need a language teacher for any or all of the following:

-Spanish (high level of grammatical know-how required)

-Japanese

If you're willing to do Skype, I've been speaking Spanish for 16 years.

Hmmm, come to think of it I could use some local (Madison, WI) poly friends for networking and socializing - especially of the variety where I don't have to try to make a regular in-person meeting to stay in touch since there are long periods of time in which my ability to get out is unreliable.
26th-Sep-2012 04:51 am (UTC)
I have some poly friends in Madison. I could poke them.

Not for me, but for my sister, who is in the St Louis area and looking for work. She just passed the MO bar and graduated this past spring from WUStL with a JD and an MBA (yeah, one of those), and is looking for work in either law or finance. She's smart, hard-working, and has appalling politics.

Looking for employment in either the Twin Cities or Madison, WI area. I have my MN insurance licenses and have worked at State Farm at an agent's office doing policy work. I also have call center experience at a cable company. I rock at customer support and billing too!

I can also do some sewing things (embroidery, hems, buttons, tailoring) as well as cooking/cleaning. I'd absolutely love a position that helped out an older person with their ADLs.

I am pretty good with computer things, though mostly on the end-user side of things rather than the programming/hardware side of things.

I'm looking for anything, really. I am highly adaptable and I learn quickly.
26th-Sep-2012 04:03 pm (UTC)
I don't have a specific open position to point you at, but have you thought about computer help desk work? It would combine your good-with-computer-thingsness with your call center experience and customer support skillz.

Hello! I'm new to this community so I don't know you folks yet, but hi! I'm glad to meet you.

And I too am looking for a job, in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. I just graduated from Berea College with a B.A. in History/Appalachian Studies, but I worked for years and years before that as an administrative assistant. I'm ideally looking for library or museum work too, but at this point I'd be happy to go back to my old career. I also have a great deal of transcription experience (medical, legal and general) and editing/proofreading experience. I think I'm a better editor than writer, but I write pretty well too.

Any leads would be appreciated! I've had a few here and there but so far nothing long term or with benefits, and we really need those.

I am going bonkers looking for places to submit my writing...I've tried submitting to multiple places, and so far only sold one story...I'm told that I am not delusional and my writing is good, so obviously I need to find more markets!
