YOU GUYS.

Hearth
We got the house.

*faints*
*revives self*

Um, 'k, big important thing right now is the need for boxes and assistance. I will be home all day tomorrow if you're able to bring boxes here. If you're not, e-mail me at shadesong AT gmail.com to arrange pickup. Thanks to your recommendations, I've ordered boxes from USPS, and I'll be skulking around the backs of liquor stores Sunday afternoon to grab all of those boxes.

So okay. About the house.

It's still in Watertown, very close to the Cambridge line, but still walking distance to Elayna's school. One block from the 73 bus and a few from the 71, so it's an easier commute for me; it makes Adam's walk slightly longer but not much, and it's closer to work for Judah.

It's a single-family. Which means no more paranoia about walking over people's heads, no one complaining when we inflate the airbed, none of that. We get the whole house.

All the staircases have banisters. (None of them do here, which made things difficult for me and several other friends and family with mobility issues.)

Bedrooms are large and have what are technically walk-in closets - not like my Florida friends would think of walk-ins, but you can step in and there are multiple poles and stuff.

HUGE ATTIC FOR STORAGE. We had zero storage space here besides our tiny closets, which created this overall feeling of clutter.

Two multi-car garages. One is rented to someone, but we get one whole one. And the motor-court area might be big enough for firespinning. Also a little stone courtyard with a bench and a clothesline along the side of the house, and a yard between/behind the garages - small, but room for an assortment of vegetables.

Really big kitchen. Dining room to the side so our table won't block traffic like it does here. Living room is maybe a little bigger, but also it has a built-in china cabinet for our tschotschkes. And off the living room, a beautiful little sunroom.

(Me to Judah: "What should we use the sunroom for?"
Judah: "Craft room?"
Me: "I was just going to say that.")

2 1/2 baths. Most of the places we'd been looking at had 1, which we could've lived with, but obviously this is better! Also a linen closet, which we didn't have here.

And the basement. You guys. The basement, other than the laundry room (with shelves! and places to hang stuff!), is an in-law apartment. The guys haven't decided which of them gets the bedroom there yet (the other bedrooms are on the top floor), but the living room? That's their game room. slipjig and zeyr, y'all can be over every damn night playing Dominion with them if you want, and I will never have to feel exiled to my bedroom. Also there's a kitchen down there, and Adam and Judah both arrived independently at "we can cook eggs down there!" (The smell of cooking eggs turns my stomach.)

And they're fine with three cats, and with us painting the interior. I finally get some color.

And they just need the security deposit right now (this is the only no-fee listing I've seen in the year I've been looking), and my mom mailed me a check for that yesterday, so we don't have to do emergency fundraising. We'll see if we can get the last week of February pro-rated so we can start moving in then, but even then, Mom's check will cover that. Thank you so much, those of you who've offered to contribute stuff to be auctioned, but it looks like we don't need that at present, phew. (I'll still do a little fundraising of my own because we're ditching this couch - it won't survive being sawed apart and reassembled again - but that's not an emergency.)

*breathes*

Did I mention that, after Judah officially moves in in a few months, we'll be paying $300 a month less than we are now? We have been living so close to the bone, you guys. This means financial breathing room. And also the removal of my last big stressor.

This is gonna be the best birthday gift ever.

Yaaaaay!!! So glad for you all. Any word from jackass landlords about letting you out of the lease?
3rd-Feb-2012 04:32 pm (UTC)
This human has read my mind exactly. (Although I actually used "jackal" not "jackass".)
3rd-Feb-2012 04:31 pm (UTC)
OMG that's amazing! *crosses fingers for you current landlords to not be douchenozzles*

Also, you know, if they do want to be douchenozzles and charge you for breaking the lease early, I'm happy to contribute to a fundraiser auction.

They shouldn't; we have a Plan that I'll post about after we've put it into action.

Wow. That is amazing!
*glee*

I wish I could help with packing and boxes and things (there is a huge liquor store up my street with BOXES APLENTY), but Saturday is one of those days where everything squeaks, it's so close-packed. Perhaps, when I look at my schedule for next week, I could run some boxes up, but that's a bit of a long shot.

Congrats!

I can't wait to see the new place. :)
3rd-Feb-2012 04:51 pm (UTC)
Congrats! Living space that isn't stressful is SO important.
3rd-Feb-2012 04:53 pm (UTC)
I'm hoping that this will fix some of my sleep issues. I imagine I'll still need Lunesta, but if I can stop waking up at 3 or 4 am, I'll be a lot more functional.

To get boxes cheaply and easily, post an ad on Craigslist saying you want them. Also look for ads there from people offloading boxes.

I am so happy for the four of you.

Congratulations :-)

Any problems with the soon-to-be-ex-landlords?

YAY!!! *does happy flailing Kermit dance* Having Been There and Done That, I know just how much of a stressor trying to find a new place can be, and I'm so glad something absolutely perfect showed up for you guys!

BTW, I have a few smallish boxes over here that might be good for small-but-heavy items, so let me know if/when you'd like to come get them; I can also see if I can get paper boxes from work, although I don't know how easy it'll be bringing them home on the T. (I work right near North Station/the Garden, FWIW.) Keep me posted, OK?
