State of the 'song
Three days in a row of actual sleep! Note: This doesn't mean my insomnia is cured, because that's actual sleep with the highest dose of Lunesta they'll prescribe. Which is better than very little sleep on the highest dose of Lunesta they'll prescribe.

All my bloodwork was negative, sooooo.... *wide-eyed shrug* My heart hasn't been bugging me, so I guess I will just keep an eye on things?

State of Sindrian Arts!
sindrian's new and improved machine is up and running! This happened right before Arisia, so we had forgotten to mention it because Arisia. He's begun manufacturing Kickstarter rewards, and you will be able to buy a Kikori for your very own self as soon as he has the shopping cart up on his website! They will be $5K per complete kit. Link will likely be up next week, with a full description of what comes in that kit.. In the meantime, feel free to nudge me for details.

Advice Requested
So I'm applying for a grant for my writing, and I'm to submit 25 pages of Cicatrix. This can be "a single work, or up to four excerpts".

I'm torn. The thing about Cicatrix is that it starts off pretty dark, and you have to give it a bit to see where it's going. I'm trying to decide if it's best to send 25 pages starting at the very beginning, or send four excerpts. And it occurred to me that I have people I can ask the opinion of.

If I send four excerpts, it'd be the reading I did at Arisia '11, Wiscon, and PhilCon - Ash first discovering the club and Aaron, Ash and Aaron first meeting and dancing, Aaron's tattoo, Kai's introduction. If I send one chunk, it'll be the reading I just did at Arisia '12, but adding the first bit from the other reading, because that's where the story begins; I just skipped it because many of you had already heard it.

So if you've been to both variations of this reading - which one works better?

Friday Memeage
Wearing: Still my sock monkey pajamas. But I will shower and dress soon.
Reading: Encyclopedia of the Exquisite: An Anecdotal History of Elegant Delights, by Jessica Kerwin Jenkins, and Chasing the Moon, by A. Lee Martinez.
Writing: Cicatrix, and also I have a poem-seed rattling around.
Knitting: I finished the first sleeve for the toddler sweater; I really should've started he second sleeve yesterday, but I so hate picking up stitches around armholes or thumb gussets, so I put it off. Today I must.
Planning: Today, writing, that sleeve, several business-type things, and figuring out what to do for Family Dinner. (We really need to plan in advance.) Tomorrow, the DeCordova museum to see emilytheslayer's installation! If we have any plans on Sunday, no one has told me what they are.

You?

Wearing: As many layers as I can because COLD. Also black fingerless gloves because the arthritis in my thumbs has been nasty lately.
Reading: Alanya to Alanya by L. Timmel DuChamp
Writing: Just posted a new episode for Wonder City Stories that is my Blog For Choice Day contribution.
Planning: Housecleaning tomorrow, because I'm finally not freelancing or sick on a weekend. And sleep. And am contemplating hot tub for poor ol' achy bones.

My gut would say 4 excerpts and why, but I haven't heard the readings.
20th-Jan-2012 06:36 pm (UTC) - Um...a grant?
To work on a novel? I did not know that this was a thing in the world. Please tell me more?

There are apparently lots of grants! This one's state-specific, but google around.

Yay, I'm glad you guys are coming! Dress warmly, as two of the pieces are outside. :)
20th-Jan-2012 07:52 pm (UTC) - Friday.
Wearing: not enough layers, because I have pretty kick-ass outer layers (big coat with hood, stompy boots, scarf).
Reading: I've torn through 4 new books this month; I'm letting myself re-read some Elizabeth Haydon (currently Destiny) before starting something new again. Maybe I'll relegate Destiny to home-reading and take new-reading on the bus to work.
Planning: Tonight, going to something that might be like the Flea (called Taboo) and possibly returning Saturday night to buy things. Saturday: gaming starting at noon, then perhaps back to Taboo. Sunday: teaching in the morning, then wedding stuff in the afternoon; could be looking at venue and getting that settled, could be looking at wedding dresses.

For what it's worth: all the agents I know get really irritated when they ask for twenty pages and get five pages from this scene and four pages from that scene and so on. Cherry-picked samples are no use to them, they don't give any idea of narrative flow or tension or context, or the author's ability to write the plain stuff. A grant application is not quite the same thing, but it's close enough. Send the opening twenty-five pages of the book.

Friday Memeage
Wearing: clothes, insufficiently many. of the "I have work? right. pants that are not blue jeans, shirt, black sweater over it" variety.
Reading: Please don't kill me! The Girl who Played with Fire. I'm almost done with it so I can go back to reading good stuff soon. Like the riddle/stars book, that I can't remember the title of.
Writing: Grad school essays. Also arisia write up, if I get the essays done
Knitting: SOCKS! Pair 3/3 for the person who bartered me garb. Also, thank you for explaining the scarf! I wish I had known, and could have picked such a thing up!
Planning: Today: sleeping, so I have brain to write essays with tomorrow. Tomorrow: writing essays. Calling my Aunt to arrange schedules because I GOT INTO HOTLINE TRAINING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which means my schedule is staying what it is for flights to/from Baltimore for my grandmother's 90th Birthday, so I miss as little as possible of training.
Sunday: see tomorrow.

I don't know how the page counts or anything line up, but OMGWOW the club scene, and while the reading you did at Arisia 2012 is still overwhelmingly good, I think somehow everyone should be introduced to Cicatrix via the club scene.
