Tired and feeling slightly off. Mild glutening? Maybe?

Sometimes progress = looking at what you have so far and saying "I can do better than that."

I swear there is a muse who visits people in the shower. (Pervy muse!) Because I emerged from the shower with the first scene of a new beginning in my head. (Kieran, walking to the Library just after sundown, fog curling around his feet, in formal House garb, gearing himself up to speak at a meeting of the Talthar Kithrayna in exile, the speech that changes everything.)

I get so tired.
On Friday, Feb. 11, the day Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down, CBS chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square...in the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers.

That's the just-the-facts version.

Now look at the typical media version. Which feels the need to bring up Logan's physical appearance, slut-shame her for having had consensual sex in the past (not even on this trip), and tut-tut that now she knows she's not invincible, and has been taken down a peg. With the implication that she had it coming.

You guys. I just get really tired sometimes.

You can pretty well assume that every day = work and writing. Today also includes dinner with mangosteen, yay. :)

Dear Song,

I was hoping that you might provide us with a signal boost for our Child's Play Gaming Marathon. Below is our press release. I just found out that we will also have a table this weekend at Boskone .

The fact that her own network--headlined by Katie Couric--came out with the story last night in a relatively respectful manner gives me a glimmer of hope.

That it happened at all sets me right back.

And that a bunch of western "journalists" can play so cutsie with her story makes me want to go all hulk-smash. BIG hulk-smash. I may need to take up the heavy bag at a boxing gym to get the hulk-smashies out safely.

Actually, Anderson Cooper pretty much repeated what CBS said verbatim, said he is respecting her wishes to be left alone, and wished her well.

No dwelling, just sympathy for a colleague. It was a glimmer.

Long blog post/rant coming in about 20 minutes about rape in the media. Thank you for posting those links (and for *all* of the work you do to fight rape and support survivors).

Re: that second Lara Logan article, I don't know what's more appalling: the slut-shaming and focus on her appearance and personal life (as if these things make any difference), or the fact that it treats comments like "OMG if I were her captors and there were no sanctions for doing so? I would totally rape her" as anything other than utterly vile.

As jimhines said, though, the work you do to bring these things to our attention is invaluable. Keep it up.

I wrote to the woman who wrote the LA Weekly article. I wondrously managed to NOT use four letter words, but I did use my best "LOOK AT YOUR LIFE, LOOK AT YOUR CHOICES" voice.

She gave a TOTAL non-pology in the comments.

That muse visits me a lot, too. The logical side of me says its because you're relaxed and focused on the mundane, low-brain activity of washing yourself. The spiritual side of me says it's because I connect so well with water :)

I got one in the shower this morning too, but I think she might've gotten lost.

She put a children's book in my head. I'm an industrial designer.

I followed a link from the LA Weekly to "Mofo Politics" and I had to stop. I can't let idiots ruin my day, as much as I want to rant against them.

Salon.com has a good roundup of the story, I thought.

As usual, don't read the comments, but considering it's a liberal news site, it's better than usual.

NPR actually vaped a lot of user comments on the Logan story, then reminded their audience that victim-blaming is tired and racist/ ideological speculation about her attackers was unproductive, since all we know is that they are criminals.

It was pretty awesome.

When I lived in Los Angeles long ago, LA Weekly was a progressive alternative weekly (somewhat like the Village Voice or Boston Phoenix) and would have known better than to publish stuff like this.

"Consummated their newfound independence" with a brutal gang rape? SO MUCH WRONG WITH THAT STATEMENT, where to begin.

You're right about the slut-shaming and "beautiful girl had it coming, needs to be taken down a peg" -- come on, maybe they just raped her because she was there, you know? And we're not hearing the stories of the not so blonde and not so white and not so "pretty" women who also got raped amidst that chaos.

From the blog that claims to know its human rights, and to not be saying that it's her fault, the bloggers describing the rape as the crowd "consummating their newfound independence" is pretty nuffed up. Implication: You "consummate" a marriage with consensual sex, and "consummate" independence with brutal gang rape! Seriously? "They can't help it! That's how independence is sealed!"
