Very brief, for once

I am not happy to say that my ankle is still fucked; I will go to the doctor today.

I *am* happy to say that WisCon has disinvited Elizabeth Moon as guest of honor. :)

I am sorry to hear exactly one of these things.
21st-Oct-2010 01:03 pm (UTC)
I'm pretty sure which one.

You know, I am only now getting caught up on this Elizabeth Moon controversy, and while I have to say, while I object to a lot of things she says, I would not qualify her as extremist. THIS lady here: http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/ -- now THAT is an extremist. With nut-jobs like her roving around and getting a lot of national attention, I can't even put Elizabeth Moon in the same bucket.

I've been quietly following the Elizabeth Moon thing, and I don't recall seeing anyone call her an extremist. On the contrary, it's been acknowledged that her views aren't all that unusual -- and that that's part of the problem, that a con that's supposed to be more-or-less safe-space away from mainstream bigotry is now honoring someone who espouses bigoted views, which makes it not safe space for many potential attendees.

Oh, it was in the blog post 'song linked to yesterday (http://aqueductpress.blogspot.com/2010/09/politics-of-discourse-feminist-and.html) -- well, actually the author calls Elizabeth Moon's _speech_ "extremist" not the woman herself, which is somewhat different.

I do agree that the insidious norm is definitely a problem -- I do think it's worth one's time to engage such people in conversation. Because from the body of the infamous E.M. post, I would not equate E.M. with a Fox pundit and I do think it'd be possible to get somewhere...

My question is, and I don't know the answer, DID she actually engage in worthwhile conversation in comments to her post BEFORE she got sick and tired of it all and deleted everything (also NOT cool)?

As I recall, she engaged in something, but I wouldn't call it worthwhile conversation...
21st-Oct-2010 02:29 pm (UTC)
uber-defensive ravings, I take it? blah, not useful at all.
21st-Oct-2010 02:51 pm (UTC)
I believe she was accused of (amongst other things) deleting comments that were questioning her views as controversial and other such non-efforts on engaging in intelligent, public discourse related to the discussion.

A lot of screencaps are linked here: http://maevele.dreamwidth.org/357675.html?thread=1300779#cmt1300779

What I recall is that no, she didn't engage in conversation, she engaged in defending her racism. I don't have time this morning to re-read all of it, but her replies made things worse than the original post.

Yes, what spoothbrush said. Didn't have enough brain-f00 to pull the reference up fast enough.

Hope the doctor can help you out...

and *sigh of relief*.

So sorry abut the ankle. Take care, you.

And yay for people actually standing up and bringing about a positive change in what should be a cool, safe space. I think I just got a little hope booster. (Well, that and the victim in strip-search case calling out Congressional candidate Jeff Perry yesterday. Reason to hope keeps a'comin'!)

Sorry to hear about the ankle, but at least there's good news on the Wiscon front.
21st-Oct-2010 02:37 pm (UTC)
I hope your ankle heals up faster than this decision was made. (I am, however, very glad it was...especially since I already had my non-refundable plane tickets to MSN.)

You have an extra h in your link. hhttp confused my browser. (Fortunately, looking at it for about two seconds let me figure out the problem.)
