Oh, Seth Green. You keep coming up with more reasons for me to love you.

I kept thinking that when I saw him. WOOT this was great!
13th-Sep-2010 03:13 am (UTC) - Re: This
I thought it was the guy who played Bud Bundee on Married With Children! I guess the Robot Chicken DVD cover over the lead singer's boob should have tipped me off.

Perfect. The dancing was terrible.

That was kinda cute, and it took me a few minutes to recognize Seth Green. I could figure out Psylocke, Lara Croft, and the Baroness, but not the fourth woman with the guns. The guy in the Flash costume wasn't too bad, even though his weight was clearly being played for laughs.

Too bad all the gamer girls were skinny. Would have been nice to see some fat girl geeks portrayed as attractive in something like this, though. That part makes me kind of sad.

Also more racial diversity would be good.
11th-Sep-2010 04:38 pm (UTC)
And age diversity!
11th-Sep-2010 04:39 pm (UTC)
All of it! I like your idea of doing one at Wiscon. :)
11th-Sep-2010 04:58 pm (UTC)
We'd need equipment and people able to use it and volunteers and... yeah. Next WisCon would be a good one to use -- I believe it's WisCon 35, so it'll probably max out attendance. And one could get a bunch of authors one might not normally get, that sort of thing.

Yes. I like the song -- which seems a reasonable gamer-girl anthem -- but the video just made it seem like a fantasy for gamer boys. :(

I was thinking that. It's nice to see geek girls represent, but they all were still the stereotypical fashion model types. One of the things I like about the geek community in general is that they tend to have more diverse standards of attractiveness...

It's not really a matter of "portraying," per se; the four women of Team Unicorn are the ones doing the writing and singing, as well as appearing on-screen.
12th-Sep-2010 04:16 pm (UTC)
yes!
13th-Sep-2010 01:04 pm (UTC)
It is a matter of portrayal in terms of who they chose to insert in the video. They could have put more varied geek women in -- they have a fat geek man, several skinny geek men, some of them awkward, some of them not, but no variation in the portrayal of geek women. It's like... the way a museum is arranged, you know? Omission is as informative as inclusion, in some ways, but only if you're aware of the omission.

I'm sorry if I gave the impression that I was denying "Team Unicorn"'s geek cred. I had no idea one way or the other.

Oh, I know! I had to keep looking to verify. And often people *do* just hire models.

Han Solo. :)

Who was clearly an inspiration for Mal, of course!
13th-Sep-2010 11:17 am (UTC)
Oh, and the fourth woman was Han Solo. :)
11th-Sep-2010 05:25 pm (UTC) - reminds me of this chicken... or egg

So gamer girls are skinny, wear false eyelashes and put lots of time into their hair?
11th-Sep-2010 08:32 pm (UTC)
Obviously!
13th-Sep-2010 11:19 am (UTC)
Some do, some don't.

(People think I put a lot of time into my hair, and I just let it air-dry, FWIW.)
13th-Sep-2010 07:37 pm (UTC)
That airdrying shit takes hours, yo. That counts. Never mind co-ordinating around not having wet clothing as a result, which I've never pulled off.

Not that there is any other reasonable option for such as the curl in this house. Evil blow dryer is evil.
14th-Sep-2010 02:28 am (UTC)
Eh. I mean, I don't touch it. I tried blow-drying with a diffuser once, but it takes too long.

I just deal with wet shirts. I don't put on silk til the hair is dry, is all. But regular shirts, sure.
14th-Sep-2010 03:30 pm (UTC)
*nod* If combing the tangles out in the shower while the conditioner's in means I'm touching it, I guess I'm doing more than you are, but not touching during air dry counts as time spent to me.

The wet shirts are a problem for me in winter. In high school, there were Circumstances which caused the hair not to be long enough to matter, so letting my hair freeze en route to school wasn't so problematic. Nowadays, brr.
