Happy birthday to the ever-delectable enderfem, and also to silme, wcg, and ysabel!

Hello to new readers handful_ofdust and royal_spice!

State of the 'Song
Rest came hard yesterday, thanks to the heat. Still working off post-Readercon exhaustion. Also, while Adam does not snore on the CPAP, every time the CPAP slips it produces a roaring noise that wakes me up. So there's that.

Blogathon
I have 46 items pledged for the Blogathon auction; I have 49 slots. I have only 32 items absolutely confirmed or in my hands. If you were planning to make stuff, please let me know where you are on that; "haven't started yet" is an okay answer, I just want to make sure I'm still on your radar. If you make stuff and handn't signed up but have something neat in your inventory that I could auction for BARCC, please let me know!

Database issued is solved; I can use OpenOffice instead of Access, yay.

Click here to sponsor me, and send me your e-mail receipt so I can keep track of my fundraising!

Yale is Making me Crazy
Explo is at Yale this year. Elayna leaves on Sunday; my mother-in-law is here Friday-Monday, so I really only have until Thursday to get her all packed.

We finally cracked the student manual and got to the packing list, and I am deeply frustrated by the amount of stuff we need to buy.

Desk lamp. Hand soap. Land phone, because they aren't allowed cell phones. I have to pack a lamp. And a big clunky phone and a fan, because they don't have A/C or fans... seriously, this list is extensive, and would be hilarious if I didn't have to buy everything on it.

Yale, why the hell do you not put out a little damn hand soap?

Any locals have twin x-long sheets I can borrow so I don't have to buy a new set of sheets that I'll then just be stashing in the closet for three years til she goes to college?

This Week
I'll be out tonight (Inception) and tomorrow (roller skating), and Adam's mom gets here Friday, so I really mean it when I say I am not here. I am not trying to avoid you. You are, in fact, invited to roller skating. People can stop by Thursday night to drop off Blogathon item donations, but be advised that Thursday night's our last chance to pack, so we'll be a bit distracted.

Link Soup

Daily Science
A liquid armour has been shown to stop bullets in tests carried out by UK scientists at BAE systems in Bristol.

Plans
Work, home... I hope to get my Readercon post done today as well as badgering Elayna into putting away her clean clothes and teaching her to do laundry. Also more Blogathon stuff. And I got pinged yesterday by someone who's all "hey, I'm going to be in town tomorrow!" and I am like "you are so funny." Tonight's sneak preview of Inception is at the Loew's Boston Common, and I have one ticket available; you'd need to be at the theater by 6. Anyone?

Next post will be more interesting! I am still mostly asleep, and very headachey.

EDIT: Also I must block a baby blanket tonight and a scarf tomorrow. Family, clear the damn dining room table, s'il te plait.

Yeah, when I went to Explo at Yale it was a lot like packing for college, only for three weeks--I think I managed with just checking one big duffel bag on the plane, but my room was pretty bare.

Anyway, good luck getting Elayna all packed up!
13th-Jul-2010 01:07 pm (UTC)
I'm assuming two suitcases at this point. If not for all of the room stuff, she could totally have managed with one!

Except that Elayna doesn't read my LJ, so this is addressed to only Adam. :P
13th-Jul-2010 12:33 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the birthday greetings.
13th-Jul-2010 12:56 pm (UTC)
I may have hand soap!
13th-Jul-2010 01:05 pm (UTC)
Oh, hand soap is dead cheap and thus not the issue. I'm just cranky about spending money on a desk lamp (which she will never use here, as her desk has excellent overhead lighting) and sheets that we'll just have to shove in the closet for three years, et cetera.
13th-Jul-2010 01:17 pm (UTC)
Oh, I know - and if I had the other stuff, Elayna would be more than welcome to borrow, but bleargh. This is about all I have to help with :/
13th-Jul-2010 01:49 pm (UTC)
I have a desk lamp she can borrow.
13th-Jul-2010 01:51 pm (UTC)
Yay, thanks!
13th-Jul-2010 01:51 pm (UTC)
Lol, we're crowdsourcing Elayna's Explo packing.
13th-Jul-2010 01:58 pm (UTC)
Hell, I crowdsource everything. *laugh*

What style of mask does Adam have for his CPAP? If the mask is slipping, then he likely doesn't have it on snug enough. Or is he a really active sleeper and is knocking it every which way?

I use a CPAP with a "full face" mask (which doesn't cover my entire face, but does cover my mouth and nose, because I have allergies and my mouth tends to fall open while I sleep if my nose gets stuffed up), and my mask is getting old - probably about 2 1/2 years old by now, because I've been without insurance, and the velcro on the straps has worn out. I was using it but not feeling like I was sleeping very well, and then realized that the straps were coming so loose during the night that i might as well not be wearing it. I pinned them up, and now I sleep really well again. And my partner never complains about the noise.
13th-Jul-2010 01:48 pm (UTC)
Exactly this. It really has to be snugger than one thinks. I know it took me a few days of fidgiting to get the fit really good.

Also, it helps if the skin is free of lotions or creams. I usually use a cotton round with some astringent on it to clean my face before applying the mask - it helps ensure a good seal. Washing the cushion - the soft part that goes on the face - every day also helps with that.
13th-Jul-2010 01:28 pm (UTC)
While technically the beds were extra-long, I got through 3 1/2 years in dorms with regular sized jersey sheets, which stretched to accomodate the mattress.
13th-Jul-2010 01:29 pm (UTC)
Also, would she be able to pick up some of the things (fan especially) at the Yale bookstore? Might be worth a call down there.
13th-Jul-2010 01:38 pm (UTC)
They do have all of those things and then some, but of course double-priced.
13th-Jul-2010 01:55 pm (UTC)
Definitely pricey. I just can't imagine trying to get a fan -- a FAN -- in a suitcase.

Not sure why I decided that fan needs extra emphasis. But a FAN.
13th-Jul-2010 01:55 pm (UTC)
Now the word "fan" is weirding me out. I'm going to do something else now.
13th-Jul-2010 01:58 pm (UTC)
FAN FAN FAN FAN FAN

Yeah, that word doesn't mean anything anymore.
13th-Jul-2010 04:53 pm (UTC)
Actually, that's a curse word in Swedish, so it means a lot! Although we pronounce it with a different sounding A.

And it kind of goes well with what you're feeling right now, annoyance and all.
13th-Jul-2010 04:54 pm (UTC)
Oh! Which curse word? I always like context for my unintentional naughtiness.
13th-Jul-2010 05:05 pm (UTC)
Its another name for the Devil, but for most its probably fairly meaningless. Its the most common one in Sweden, as far as I know. It's not horrible, so they use it in tv series and movies etc for emphasis, but I find that it sound very uneducated and that you should be able to say something and put enough emphasis on it without using curse words.
Its not as "bad" as, say, "fuck," but used much like it.

13th-Jul-2010 05:07 pm (UTC)
Oh, and they don't beep things on TV here (at least I've never heard it, only on American series). So you actually hear it, a lot.
13th-Jul-2010 01:59 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that would be rather challenging.
13th-Jul-2010 01:38 pm (UTC)
I have some extra XL sheets at Yale if you need 'em. Also a pillow.
13th-Jul-2010 01:42 pm (UTC)
Dude, that would be totally awesome. Thank you!
13th-Jul-2010 01:56 pm (UTC)
No problem. :) I'll email you for logistics.
13th-Jul-2010 01:38 pm (UTC)
Wow, that list...reminds me of when I and my sister did summer programs like Explo.

Plus ca change, I guess.
13th-Jul-2010 01:58 pm (UTC)
Haven't started yet. Is offering crits a legitimate donation for this one?
13th-Jul-2010 02:00 pm (UTC)
I could take that.
13th-Jul-2010 02:05 pm (UTC)
Cool. I used to have something set up with my credentials and the fandoms I know enough to work with, but main things - former slush reader for Fantasy Magazine, former copy editor, recent former teacher of composition, lots of experience beta-ing original fiction, some with fanfic, and I'll work up a list of fandoms I could do.
13th-Jul-2010 02:10 pm (UTC)
Yale, why the hell do you not put out a little damn hand soap?

I know you're not going to believe this is that big a deal for an institution like Yale, but colleges have figured out that anything made available for students like that soon becomes a massive cost centre as students abuse the privilege. You don't want your tuition bill to cover the antics of the dorm idiot, who decided it would be fun to plug up the toilets with bars of soap. (Bad enough that they instead turn to dropping entire rolls of TP down the hopper.)
13th-Jul-2010 02:58 pm (UTC)
If Elayna needs anything while she's at Explo, feel free to dispatch me -- I'm a lot closer to Yale than you are, and can deliver the whatever. Alas, I have no extra fans, we're using them all.
13th-Jul-2010 03:04 pm (UTC)
Thanks! :)

Wha...? Don't they have a campus shop that supplies such things? =8oO
How many of them will actually be needed right from day one?

[REMEMBERS OWN FIRST EXPEDITION TO UNIVERSITY: THE CAR WAS FULL OF MY BOOKS AND TAPES AND MY TV AND CASSETTE DECK AND THE CLEVER SMALL (BUT NOT EXACTLY LIGHTWEIGHT) AMPLIFIER MY DAD HAD BUILT FOR ME, AND A COUPLE OF NAFF LITTLE BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS... AND THE OLD WOODEN DESK-CONVERTED-TO-SHELVING-UNIT THAT I LIKED TO RACK THEM UP IN... BECAUSE I WAS GOING TO BE *LIVING* THERE!]

[TRIES TO FOCUS ON THE KIND OF STUFF YOU'RE MENTIONING]

I dimly remember having to pack several changes of clothes, a towel and an overnight bag, a knife, fork, cup, spoon, plate... I got there with the dregs of the family cutlery drawer, and ended up buying better cutlery from the campus shop as soon as I saw it, some of which I still have and use every day! [JINGLES FAVOURITE "BUMPY TEASPOON" IN TEA MUG] =:o} I probably packed some Vosene shampoo, in terror of not being able to find any when I got there. But... a desk lamp? That was built into the desk, provided with the room! No aircon, of course: this was naturally windy Britain, in the pre-technological 1980s! * If it got too hot in summer, we just had to suck it up. =:o\ (Or more accurately, spend all day hanging around in the main university buildings, which *did* have aircon! =:o} )

*(The Sony Walkman had only just been invented, you know. I know this 'cos I bought one of the first recording ones to ease the job of taking notes in lectures. It was the size of a housebrick, cost nearly as much as my rent for the first term, and it ran on something called *cassette tapes*... Kind of like a long greyish flatworm with an MP3 encoded all down its body, curled up around a bobbin and then sealed in a plastic shell... Turned out to be useless for lectures 'cos the profs all mumbled and the class shuffled their feet and papers, but it was great for getting interviews for the student radio station! But I digress.)

Hm. Nope, it sounds to me that Yale is being a bit stupid in their packing requirements for what is, after all, only a brief stay in their hallowed halls. *Surely* a stock of suitable desk lamps and/or basic phone handsets could be made availble for loan or hire?! (Mind you, we only had a payphone in the hallway. You had to queue for hours sometimes to use it, or sneak into another hall or residence and use theirs... And tough luck if you forgot to stock up on 10p and 50p pieces! =:o\ )

You do know I was around pre-Walkman too, right? Got my first one in late elementary school....

I don't think I'll be buying a phone. She doesn't like talking on the phone anyway; she'd rather communicate via e-mail, and she will have periodic e-mail access. If she needs to call, I'm sure she can use someone else's phone!
13th-Jul-2010 04:36 pm (UTC)
"You do know I was around pre-Walkman too, right? Got my first one in late elementary school...."

Yeah, I was kinda drifting into a "You young'uns don't know you're born!" old git's ramble there, wasn't I? I guess 'cos I was picturing Elayna going into the situ, I was really addressing her rather than you. Feel free to show it to her if you think she'll get a kick out of it. =:o}
13th-Jul-2010 04:12 pm (UTC)
Why on earth are they not allowed cellphones? Everytime I've been on a campus in the last 8 years every single person I've see has had one practically glued to their hand.
13th-Jul-2010 04:14 pm (UTC)
They want the kids engaged and connected doing Explo stuff, not texting friends back home. I've no quarrel with that policy. :)
14th-Jul-2010 05:13 am (UTC)
Haha, man, hand soap.

I went to Yale, and the hand soap thing has been an issue with students for years. They've never provided it, and I'm going to bet that they never will since they've discovered that simply ignoring requests and petitions has worked out for them so far, and I bet it saves them a good bit of money.

I assume she'll be staying in a dorm on the main quad, and the dorms there get really, ridiculously hot, so she definitely will need a fan of some sort. Because of the way the dorms are structured, there is little to no airflow going on because there are no real corridors.

Additionally, the lamp is a good idea because the only lighting is fluorescent ceiling fixtures, which gave me terrible headaches if I got stuck in a room with one for too long. :)
14th-Jul-2010 10:47 am (UTC)
I have a spare landline phone with actual bells in it, if you're interested.
14th-Jul-2010 12:59 pm (UTC)
Alas, unless you're in Boston in the next two days, I'd have no time to get it from you!
