Happy birthday to rain_herself!

State of the 'song
Generally concerned and fussy.

State of 'song's sister
No new news that I know of, and I don't want to call and risk waking her; more update later.

DAY 6, Tuesday - Masada, Dead Sea
This morning descend through the Judean Desert to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth at 1200 feet below sea level. Drive along the shores to Masada. A fortress built by King Herod, and later used by the Jewish Zealots as their last stronghold against the Romans. Arriving in Masada, ascend the mount via cable car to visit the excavations. Descend via cable car. This evening enjoy dinner at your hotel in Dead Sea.

Shayara
I had an unusual number of questions about Shayara in the recent question/answer poll. I am now wondering if there are any other things about it you're curious about...

Buy this!
saraphina_marie's new book is out!

I do not have a link soup today, as yesterday was all fretting about my sister, trying and failing to nap, and finishing the Neptune shawl (having had to rip back the fourth repeat and half the edging).

Daily Science
Swarm robotics.

Plans
Work. After work I actually get writing time yay. Mark has 'specially requested that I finish futzing around with "Maxfield Parrish Blue(s)" so I can submit it somewhere, so yes yes I'll do that today. Diesel tonight.

Thanks! :)

Good luck with the writing round today.

I seem to be on Alewife Brook Parkway and in your postcode. Other than Mind's Eye, is there any fiberness worth hitting up?
29th-Jun-2010 03:02 pm (UTC)
Mind's Eye is the closest, but if you get down to Downtown Crossing, Windsor Button is great!
29th-Jun-2010 03:05 pm (UTC)
Did that first yesterday, and was kind of disappointed with the selection. :/ Trying to work out if I can afford some Malabrigo Silky Merino or Pearl Bison anyways, though.

Rav claims there's somewhere else in the neighborhood called Wollcott(?), but their website doesn't exist.
29th-Jun-2010 03:07 pm (UTC)
...ah, okay, it did close down. More poking at websites to see if Brookline is too scary given the sun, I guess. :)
29th-Jun-2010 03:10 pm (UTC)
Yeah, Woolcott closed last fall? winter?

Mind's Eye doesn't have a massive selection (Windsor Button totally does), but they're great with what they do have, and the owners and employees are crazy helpful and nifty.

I've heard good things about the yarn store in Brookline. Let me know what you think if you go!

I was actually happier with Mind's Eye, even though selection was down after the sale I missed. WB, huge disappointment. WB used to have a lot more in the way of random independent stuff, and definitely carried a better Handmaiden selection (which is mainly what I was looking for from them). That said, if I wasn't allergic to most of the Noro, I'm sure I'd be happier.

29th-Jun-2010 03:18 pm (UTC)
Oh, sad re WB! I haven't been in a bit...

What are you allergic to in the Noro?
29th-Jun-2010 03:25 pm (UTC)
Mohair. Mohair mohair mohair. And given that, I can't be sure the Cash Iroha won't set me off on a cashmere level.

(Mohair, alpaca, and angora all cause me respiratory and face-itch problems to wear, spin, or knit with. I can be around them and touch skeins, I just can't work with 'em. So much for the coveted Silk Garden range.)

Also Malabrigo is yum, and you should try some if you find you can afford it.
29th-Jun-2010 03:13 pm (UTC)
I've had some other Malabrigos in the past. Made gloves in the standard issue worsted, but no one gets to see those on account of the suction. There's a few skeins of Twist being all "work with me!" and I'm all like "everything I make with you looks wrong, so you get to wait, bitches," and then they're all "screw you, bitch, I'mma sit in a skein."

29th-Jun-2010 03:17 pm (UTC)
Hee. :)

I have a skein of the sock yarn that I keep petting; only reason I'm not knitting with it right now is a) at work and b) have to do a few other things first and just used a similar color. But I want to be playing with it. I keep eyeing it.

I pretty much just go to Mind's Eye or Windsor Button and order online if I don't find what I need there, because I can't be arsed to get off the Red Line; Emily's LYS knowledge is far more compehensive!
29th-Jun-2010 03:23 pm (UTC)
The sock yarn is sooooo pretty. I have so much sock yarn begging to be made into shawls that won't come out right, though, that I just can't...

I think Emily might have been one of the ones who pointed me at Mind's Eye the other day on Twitter. Whereas I actually knew you're literally under five miles from me, so figured it was worth checking what you knew as well. :) Thanks!
