Happy birthday to sfeley!

Happy early birthday to ultra_lilac, who advances a year over the weekend!

Still tired, but feeling somewhat restored due to pretty much taking Wednesday and Thursday off entirely. The guilt of taking Wednesday and Thursday off entirely is still lurking, ready to pounce. But I swear I'll take writing time today.

There was a suggestion in my "aaaagh I am overloaded" post to hire a weekly cleaning lady. We probably can't afford weekly, but we could afford *occasional*, and then I would not have to spend chunks of my vanishing time scrubbing down the bathroom or sweeping the floor, and that'd be worth the money. Anyone have any recommendations for a cleaning service in our area (western suburbs of Boston)?

My Empire for Ashes: Behind the Writer's Brain
Katrina was one of the first characters I wrote for what came to be called Shayara. My roommate in one of my treatment centers and I came up with these two characters, twins, who shared aspects of the same name (which is where the Tamrani naming tradition came from, with Katrina begetting Katrianna begetting Liana, who'll generally just go by Lee). This is what I was 16 - so you'll see bits of 'song-at-16 in her. (Mostly the less-nice bits.) The twin sister was a casualty of me realizing a few years later that I had a ridiculous number of sets of twins in this story; now she has an older sister who gets referred to, but never appears.

Telenias sprang full-formed from my brow, like Athena with a pocketwatch. I have no idea. He just showed up.

Volunteer Training
Guys! I am kvelling. The first volunteer training I managed for BARCC has just wrapped up, and all the new volunteers are so totally excited. Some of them are friending me on Facebook. They sent me some of the decorations from their cake. I feel so maternal. :) I may see about training to be a facilitator for the next training; I'll be there for their info sessions and interviews and their contact person through the whole training already, it might be cool to be there for the entire process.

Daily Science
MIT researchers have demonstrated the first laser built from germanium that can produce wavelengths of light useful for optical communication. It’s also the first germanium laser to operate at room temperature. Unlike the materials typically used in lasers, germanium is easy to incorporate into existing processes for manufacturing silicon chips. So the result could prove an important step toward computers that move data -- and maybe even perform calculations -- using light instead of electricity. But more fundamentally, the researchers have shown that, contrary to prior belief, a class of materials called indirect-band-gap semiconductors can yield practical lasers.

Friday Memeage!
Wearing: Jeans, outer-space socks, teal tweedy sweater.
Reading: Aladdin's Lamp: How Greek Science Came to Europe Through the Islamic World, by John Freely.
Writing: No. Time. I did edit "Spaces Between" Tuesday, on paper; just need to incorporate those changes and then it's ready to submit. I need to do the fleshing out of "Maxfield Parrish Blues", tomorrow if not today. I don't get to go to the party Saturday night unless I do it. So there.
Knitting: Still baby blanket, which is almost 5/6 done.
Planning: Today: Work, writing time. BARCC tabling at BU's medical campus's presentation of the Vagina Monologues.
Tomorrow: Elayna has Girl Scout cookie sales; hopefully I won't be needed for that, so I can focus on writing and house stuff. Party tomorrow night to celebrate/mourn colleague's LSAT-taking, depending on how he feels he did. (Must check in with him re: whether I can use his name or if he wants a code name, as typing "colleague" gets old.)
Sunday: BARCC tabling at the TeenLife Boston Volunteer Fair, noon to four. I may be crashing at colleague's apartment and going over with him, if the party runs later than the buses do. Mark is meeting me there with Elayna and alyveritya, and fiddle_dragon's bringing the kids. Got civic-minded teens? Come on out! Party time! Speaking of party, am going to a Super Bowl party after that *nod*

Then I sleep.

You did not think I was made of crazy. Yay!

Not at all! It makes sense that if I have to drop some things, they should be the things I *don't* love.
5th-Feb-2010 01:06 pm (UTC) - Weekend plans...
Tomorrow, pick up nieces, go to NJ for baby naming (sans babies) - the girl gets her name before the boy! Come back to my sister's apartment, hang with the girls and Luun, sleep over.

Sunday: play Wii, read, play Set, hang out until parents and sister arrive and we have a low-key party while the Superbowl will be playing in the background. Chances of games being played: very high.

Good thing that you mentioned Expanded Horizons. A Singaporean writer - Mint Kang - is featured. :)

Planning: To sleep, to rest - but with a baby, sleep is a luxury. Writing, hopefully.

Wearing my standard PJs: really old-need-to-be-replaced sweats (bought in 1998; they have the Olympic rings embossed on them) and a ROCK BAND T-shirt.

Reading Ramsey Campbell's The Parasite, and I'm liking the language and imagery of it.

Not writing at the moment. Not knitting, as I've never knit.

Planning to do my best not to fall asleep at work today -- LOTS done this week -- and being awake enough to attend late-night screening of Road House. And being awake enough (I hope) to get to a food cart after the film, 'cause the people I know with a sandwich cart have late-night hours on Friday and Saturday and I've been meaning to get to it late at night. Maybe I'll spend Saturday napping; I also want to read this week's WTD in one fell swoop. Sunday I'll see the Super Bowl somehow in some venue, even if it's just from home. (No real interest in seeing The Who.)

I'm definitely still waking up. That'll be my big goal this morning.

Wearing: Jeans, my awesome red soft boots, purple/mauvy long sleeved tee, brown tweedy cowl neck sweater.
Reading: Brave Story, by Miyuki Miyabe, which is AWESOME.
Writing: Book reviews. Need to get one finished for Come Fall.
Knitting: The same socks that are taking forever, a commissioned giant bulky cowl, another sweater, the blanket, starting another pair of socks tonight, and a beaded shawl.
Planning: IDK stuff.

Oh hey - can we beg the use of the SUV at some point? We're giving fiddle_dragon (also in Watertown) the bookcases we're not using (not enough wall space), and we need help getting them over there...

That shouldn't be a problem, although right now it's full of boxes, so we'll need to clear those out. :)

It is very difficult for me to read "germanium" without automatically parsing it as "geranium."

That being said, a laser powered by geraniums would be pretty cool. Talk about flower power. :)

playing in Phoenix tonight, in love with cacti. Ppl say to me "hey, are you coming to Vegas too?" and I think 'no, not without 'song...
did you get my email about the foxes? not poking, just making sure.

**heaps of love upon your head**

One day, I will show you my Vegas - the Vegas in lights and glitter and desperate energy, and the Vegas on the border of the deep slow desert.

Anytime you want. :)

I did! Hopefully this week. *crosses fingers hard* I am so run-ragged right now.

So much love to you!

Two things in response to this:

1) re: writer's brain. So I gotta say, it's pretty awesome having a character in your story that shares a name with me. Considering I grew up feeling like I was a weird person, as the only folks who shared names with me were random villainesses on television shows and the lead singer of some eighties new wave band -- thank god people have stopped singing 'Walking on Sunshine' at me -- it's kinda cool seeing it used as just a normal name.

(That fact that it's got a whole other meaning now, well, I swear I only wanted the hurricane with my name to be big enough to retire the name! I have learned a valuable lesson about being careful what I wish for!)

2) I'm an alum of the University of California at Berkeley, the same college Scott Fujita went to, and rooted for him all through my undergraduate career. To find that he's continuing to be an absolutely awesome and wonderful guy -- it makes me grin like crazy. I don't really have an NFL team I root for, as I just root for the guys who played at Cal to be awesome, but Fujita is the reason I'm all Geaux Saints! this year. :)

Originally, when Katrina escaped the Council, she moved to/hid out in New Orleans.

...I changed that.
